  • JT6 to Khaler Trem Conversion

Does anyone know if you can replace the JT6 tremelo with the flat mount Khaler Pro? Will the flat mount cover the JT6 routing? How difficult would this modification be if it's possible? I would like to find 3 more '86 neck thrus; 5a, 5fx and a 6. I'll probably end up with non-khalered models made '87 or later and really want khalers on them. Of course I could fit them with Floyds but I like my khaler.

I don't think they ever made the 5a or 5fx until 87 at the earliest. I have never seen either of those with a Kahler.

I'm pretty sure you can get a routing template at:
Whammy Parts sells current and vintage guitar parts.

Buy the template & see if it covers the JT6 hole??
      ,
      I wouldn't hack up a JT6 body.

The route will cover the top part of route, but the Kahler has NO route on the back......

I figured they'd all be '87 and later. I wouldn't want to hack one up but I thought JT6 Trems were...sorry if I'm wrong but...crappy. Id love to have three more black neck-thrus to go with my M5 (Black Neck thru Charvel Grand Slam!...M5,M5a,M5fx,M6) I just don't think I can resist matching black brass Khalers on all four. Even if I covered the routing with a flat mount. I know it sounds like desecration but I don't want to hang 'em in cases, I want to wear the frets off of them. No offense to the bolt ons but I'm a neck thru fanatic. Hell I hardly play below the 7th fret. Its too much fun at the other end.

Off on a tangent, my lastest obsession is Eugenes Trick Bag. I'm so close but I keep snappin' baby E's tryin to hit that last A . Did Vai play that on a 29 fret Jem or what? I'm about to try suspending the guitar by the whammy while bending to 27th!!!!

I believe that the last A was played by using the front pickup of the guitar as a 27th fret and bending the string...

          Hope this helps!

Kahler guitars almost alway go for less money & there is a reason . So check around and find them instead of modding one out.

Yeah, because most people are dumbasses and can't be bothered learning how to set them up. They wonder why they get a tinny sound and then blame the equipment.

I do believe Kahler are working on a "universal" plate that will allow this. Check out their website. Personally, I'd sell your JT6 guitar and buy an '86 if you REALLY want a Kahler.

Kahler went out of business because no one should have to set them up that the way they should come on the guitar. Stock Floyd's, stock fender trem & even bigbsy sound good and give proper string tension without any problems why can't Kahler ?

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say. Trems always need maintenance. Kahler did stop producing the trems, but they are back now. Ever try dropping your tuning on a Floyd? Ever try it on a Kahler? MUCH easier. There are advantages and disadvantages to both trems. I like both Floyds and Kahlers. But I will say that most people don't know shit when it comes to properly setting up a Kahler...

jtr, sounds like you need to educate yourself on the Kahlers a little. Maybe do a little research before you post statements like that. I'm not trying to be an asshole, but your statements just make you look dumb in the eyes of people in the know. cool?

If I would use drop tuning I wouldn't use a guitar with a trem on it. I don't care that much for Kahler but yes I know how to set them up. I have had a few guitars with Kahler on them and couldn't get use to the feel . ( I still have my 86 mod 6)

Ok, indulge me. Tell me how (and where) you adjust the main spring tension on a Kahler without looking it up on the internet.

the Kahler floating trem on my Model 2 has always been trouble free for me. I don't use it that much though.

I must admit I do not favor the look of the flatmount. just too big.

I like both Kahlers and Floyds, but I personally wouldn't retrofit a JT6 model with a Kahler. You can put an Original Floyd on in place of the JT6, or if you really have to have a Kahler a Kahler Spyder which is a Floyd-style trem would also fit. Get an Autolatch to go with it and with the flick of the bar you can lock it and it's a stop-tailpiece!
