Right you are about the Soloist XL. I've bought and sold many USA Soloist and still have thee XL and plan to keep it. I'll post pics soon.

I'll see if I can find the link that mentioned the serial number. I can't remember what letter it was for sure.

i've got several 3b's and a 4b and they play as good as my custom shop and are rock steady in tune( even with the kids drop d tuning all the time)

The Soloist XL I kept is an awesome guitar. I can put it next to my GMP Pawn Shop Deluxe as far as quality and sound goes after adding a SD JB4 and two hotstacks. Its pearl white and I added a white pickup ring with the white pickups. Had to make some slight mods to get the hotstacks in, but it was well worth it.

I have another XL with the mystery wood fingerboard being sold soon. [img]graemlins/eyes.gif[/img]

Been through hundreds of guitars over the years and the 80's and early 90's Charvel Japanese imports are top knotch. Can't believe you can pick them up so cheap.

Gad, the Soloist XL had a ROSEWOOD fingerboard. And there were MANY Japanese Jacksons with ebony fingerboards: Warrior, Soloist, Fusion, Kelly, King V, etc. But not a single Charvel from Japan had ebony from the factory. All of the Jackson "XL" series were a step down from the original Professional Jacksons which resembled the USA guitars in nearly every way.

Here is a pic with the Charvel next to my Carvin DC127 with Ebony board. The grain on these necks resembles a chalk board more than it does Rosewood.

Thanks, Gad, I knew somebody would post a pic showing the rosewood board. The Soloist XL differed from the Soloist Pro in three ways: it lacked the ebony board, it lacked the active electronics and covered Jackson pickups, and it had a chinsey matching headstock with no pearl inlay on the logo. Thanks for coming to the rescure on this topic bro!

OK I cleaned it up a bit. Here's a re post. This in fact Ebony, but I'm not going to get into a "know it all" flaming contest. Some of the others on here know how to tell Ebony from Rosewood and can make their own decisions.
