            Nothing wrong with basswood as long as you are going to paint it. It's not the nicest looking wood. As mentioned there are some high dollar guitars being made out of it today.... Jems and Charvel EVH to name a couple.

                The JEM7VWH is alder. All the other JEMs and Universes were basswood.

                  I prefer basswood it usually has great sound & tone. Alder sometimes can sound a little off, my opinion.

                      Totally off-topic here, but check out the specs in the scans posted above. The '86 catalog says the nuts were phenolic & the '87 has them listed as carbon fiber. I only have '87 & later models & was wondering if anyone who has seen them from both years can notice a difference in the nuts, or if they were the same & it's just a mistake in the catalogs.

                        Alder bodies - the low E & sometimes A strings sound off, very hard to dial in. Basswood right off the bat sound great, even though each guitar is unique.
