do the covers affect tone much?

I don't see why they would - since they are plastic, and guitar pickups are electro magnetic. But some people claim that the covers steal a little bite.

I like the J-90c in my Model 2 as well as the Duncan JB in my Soloist. I do have to say that I'm still trying to get used to the pickups in my Fusion (J-50???). Just not dirty enough sounding for my taste to be honest.

J-50 is a PAF ish pickup 8.5 in that range.I have 2 in a maple 87 super strat and they are plenty dirty.
