• Model 4 cost?

OK, the inevitable dreaded follow-up question: what were Japanese Model 4s going for new, price-wise, back in the day (say, ca. 1987-8)?

According to the May '87 brochure, suggested retail was $849.95.

Re: Model 4 cost?

I've said it before and I'll say it again....the prices that the old model series guitars are bringing right now totally insults their value. Everyday I see people pay a lot more for a lot less.
(I'm not b!tchin' though..I've found some good deals lately! )
but still...............

according to volume 8 of the blue book of electric guitars, the last msrp for a model 4 was $850. now they range from $275 for one in "good condition" up to $595 for one that is "mint." they are worth every penny!!!

I paid just over a grand for my Model 4 with case back in '87. The rainbow crackle single hum model 5 next to it was just over a grand without a case.

Ahhhhh remember the days when mom and pop stores charged the full suggested retail price plus some.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The "blue book" not even close to accurate when it comes to imported Charvels.

does the blue book over or under value the import charvels? i've seen 2 imp charvels in a local guitar store and the prices seem along blue book lines.

so are the book prices high or low?

Re: Model 4 cost?

From what I can tell...the author of the The Bluebook of Guitar Values reaches into his @$$ and pulls out random numbers...then pawn shops who don't know any better mark up from that number...it really is a total crapshoot.

If you want to know how much something is worth, check the completed auctions on Ebay, that is what the market is paying.

The prices in the "blue book" are too high for the most part.

The post 91 imported Charvels are way way way too high.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I'll agree with that 1000%. MOST of the post 91 import Charvels couldn't hold a candle to the 86, 87, and 88 models as far as quality and fit-n-finish goes. The only exception I can think of would be the 650s and 750s.

Re: Model 4 cost?

There were no 650's or 750's made post 91, so no exceptions here.

The only post 91 model that even looks interesting is the LS-X (I think that is what it was called)
Gibson scale
Setneck
archtop
gold or black paint
string-thru
Funny body shape, sorta PRS looking

I saw one goldtop version on ebay, and one other picture on the net. My guess is they didn't sell very well.

oops...I thought they still made the 650s and 750s in 91 & 92. my bad.
