I got 2 Charvels today!!!

I got 2 Charvels today, and spent less than $200!!! Sorry, I hate to gloat, but I'm stoked about this!!!

The first was a CX 391, which I got from Ebay. Don't laugh!!! Once I cleaned the electronics and fretboard and did a set up, I was more than pleased. This thing with it's 3 Jackson pu's h/s/h KILLS!!! The only thing I'm not happy with is the placement of the locking nut, which can hit my hand, and the fact that it doesn't have a pointy headstock. Overall, however, I do like the guitar Way more than I thought I would.

Now for the other guitar. What model is

THIS

It has 2 Jackson Humbuckers, a Jack/Floyd, a 5-way switch and KICKS MAJOR ASS!!! I got it at a pawn shop.

Is this a Model 4?

The only issue with her is that it has a repaired headstock, where it cracked by the low E string. See pics, it was repaired with small dowel rods glued in. during whatever must have happened to the guitar, the jackson cover came off the tuner and is gone as well. The repair, however is solid and doesn't affect anything. Also, I don't believe the locking nut was an original part, since there is a standard nut on the neck behind it and no truss rod cover.

Very nice! That is a model 3a, around an '87 or '88 if I'm not mistaken.

what headstock does the CX have? Is it that eagle-beak atrocity? Here in Oz, they had stratheads

yep, it's an eagle beak on the cx. like i said, i don't really care for it. i'd rather have a pointy or a strathead on it.

i have been playing the two for about 2 hours tonight, alternating between them every 15 min or so. the 3a certainly has a better feel to it, at least to what i'm used to. both sound great. different from each other totally, but both are great sounding. the 3a is more blues/hard rock sounding, while the cx is more hard rock/metal sounding.

since the cx only came with 1 cheap plastic volume know and no trem bar, i will be ordering some tomorrow. the bar will be chrome and i am going to put chrome dome knobs on. i think all black/silver will look pretty cool on it.

is the cx a crappy guitar, generally speaking? if so, i must have a good one, because my first impression is favorable (except for the headstock/nut) of it. i think it rocks [img]graemlins/headbang.gif[/img]

of course, the 3a and my 1a are still better......or are they just different???

what does everyone think of the cx guitars?

The 86 - 91 Charvels were the top of the line imported guitars, Charvels were lowered down a notch when the imported Jackson came out. But they were still better than a Charvette [img]images/icons/grin.gif[/img]

I've never owned a CX but I've played a couple of different types in stores (geez, I sound like every other gear reviewer on Harmony Central!). There was a CX391 in my local guitar shop recently and I spent a while messing around with it. I thought it was a pretty cool guitar. It was a straight forward strat copy, strathead and all, in bright red with black pickguard and 3 single coils. It had been around the block too, was a bit banged up. It felt cheaper and less substantial than my Model series guitars, the hardware seemed cheap too & it had this funky trem setup. But the neck was pretty nice, and I had a lot of fun bashing on the ol' girl. Not a bad axe for the money, although it's not much more to get a Charvel Model.

I had a CX391 till acouple of weeks ago and loved it. I had replaced the pups with duncans and a Gbson and it was a tone monster despite the inconsistant basswood body. The trem wa awsome the neck was just like my model 3 and it just friggin rocked. Beat up a bit but it rocked. I was playing it today at work and thought man im gonna miss this when it sells. Gary I think the CX with the three single was a 291 and the 391 has h/s/h config. or something like that. of course it could be differant in OZ especailly since it has a strat head on it.

I think you're right, Gil. It probably was a 291. I'm not really up on the configs of those guitars, I just (vaguely) remember a number on the headstock.
