Re: model series nut size?
I checked on my Model 88 and it is right to go with a R2 nut. There is an R2 nut on my Spectrum as well, while not of the Model series technically, it's the same thing. Most Model guitars came with the Kahler style nut so just to be sure, put an R2 or R3 over it and see what fits.
That being said, my 92 Rhoads Pro has an R3, but my 750XL came stock with an R4 and a Charvel Fusion Deluxe I saw recently also had an R4 on it standard. Seems they used R3 and R4 but I don't know how they chose it.

That's weird, bro! Every C/J I've owned has had an R3 nut. How is it that your Model 88 has an R2? Weren't those guitars all with the behind the nut JT-6 lock? And, the five Charvel 750's I've owned were all R3 too..."Got a crazy feeling I don't understand,

Re: model series nut size?
All the model series I've seen were 1 11/16" (R3) but they didn't all have the "behind the nut lock". Check this out, it was original on my model 3DR. I've never seen another one like it. It is stamped Kahler too, and uses a standard floyd route. I think it is a fairly rare neck (reverse headstock, import logo, floyd nut route)! BTW, the guitar has a JT6.

mm, that Kahler nut was not really rare. It was also used on the LTD '88 USA Jackson strat among others. It's been seen on Spectrums and many 1989/1990 borderline Charvels."Got a crazy feeling I don't understand,

Re: model series nut size?
it has been my understanding that the R3 is meant for bound 1 11/16, while the R4 is for unbound 1 11/16 necks. but that doesn't mean that they didnt use R3 on there. R3 have the same string spacing that the R2 has. R4 is slightly wider, so i'm not sure which one they used and i don't have a spare nut to compare with.
oh well, i'll figure it out.
i guess i'll have to just copare the actual plastic nut instead of the floyd/kahler nut.

Re: model series nut size?
My friends Model 6 has that nut on it too, the Kahler Floyd type one. His is actually an 89 so is in the timeframe of transition.
I'm pretty sure you can use R3 and R4 on whichever neck you like as the nut itself is the same width, with different spacing inside. My bound 750XL has R4 and my bound Rhoads has an R3. But these are old school guitars. Pretty much everything with a Floyd these days is R3.

Re: model series nut size?
And just to back up that theory, here's a pic of both 3DR necks trying to fit in the same case. Trust me, the bodies of both guitars were pressed firmly toward the rear of the case in both of these pics. Now, wassup with that?
