  • Bastard Model 6, what pickups to choose?

Hey, I picked this thing up on Ebay for 2 bills with an OFR and HSC. I need to put pickups in it. Thought maybe you guys would have some good suggestions. Yes, the fish on the headstock is going away, and it is a ref-in (albeit a very nice re-fin). I play mostly hard rock , so I was thinking of a JB in the bridge, but what would you suggest for the singles, or even a different suggestion for the bridge? Hook me up boys!! Yeah, I know, the chrome pickups rings do look a little pimp-daddyish, but what the hell!!!

I'll agree on the JB in the bridge, they are a gret rock pickup. How's about a little '59 at the bridge and a cool rails in the middle?

I have a DiMarzio Steve's Special in the bridge, sounds awesome; tight bass, scooped mids (which the guitar compensates for, keeps the picking really clean), screaming high end (but not over reacting) and cool harmonics, strongly recommended. The cool thing about the special is, that they are not standard.

For the neck and middle position I go with the rest: go for the single sized humbuckers by SD. I have a lil screamin' demon in the neck position, and that sounds awesome, moderate output, nice smooth tone, nice response etc. About the lil 59; I am not so happy with mine in my model 6. I have it in the middleposition and it sounds like I have a wah switched on and have it in one position. In Holland we call that "neuzig" translation would be something like "nosey". I hope you get the point, because I think the description fits the bill really well.

so: a Steve's Special in the bridge, and a lil's creaming demon for the neck.

EMG-81/SA/SA is the way I'd go--either that or put a Duncan Distortion in the bridge and go with the previous suggestions for single coils. But that's just me. I prefer higher-output pickups.

lil 59'er in the neck...cool rail in the middle. Also check out the SD Distortion in the bridge. I agree with Gary...those single coil rings gotta go

Put a Duncan Custom in the bridge position, I think you might like it better than the JB.

if the body is made from alder I can highly recommend the DiMarzio Mega Drive. It's very tight, not super high output, a little scooped and compensates the mid-range a little. But not too much.

Distortion bridge, Cool Rails mid and Hot Rails neck in my 650XL. I've said it before and I'll say it again, that combination is unbeatable in my opinion. It is an extremely versatile set-up. The Hot Rails neck pickup gives some of the best smooth lead tones I have ever heard. The Cool Rails sounds equally good clean and overdriven, nice even tone. The Distortion is the all out metal riffng pickup, #1. I've got Li'l '59's in neck and mid in my Hamer Chapparal with a JB in the bridge. That is also a good combination, leans more towards classic rock than metal. Li'l 59's give great clean tones but I feel the driven sound leaves a little to be desired.
