Re: Diffences about model 6\'s?

OK, I just performed a little integrity test....JT6 vs OFR and here's the results:
I set one of each in my driveway and backed over them 16 or 17 times (approx.) with my truck, then I inspected them to see the real difference in quality.
The OFR won hands down bros! It wasn't bent, cracked, or otherwise compromised in any way! (it was scratched all to hell though)..... On the other hand, the poor 'ol JT6 was split in half and there was visible schrapnel all over the pavement. Plus the trem-arm just totally disappeared! Nope, couldn't find it anywhere!
So my conclusion is this: If you're going to lay your guitar out in the street and drive a 3500lb vehicle over it, the OFR will definitely hold up better. If you're just using the guitar as a musical instrument and nothing more, the JT6 will probably be sufficient. I hope this little test helps to dispell some myths.
My goal in life is to be the kind of asshole my wife thinks I am.

Re: Diffences about model 6\'s?

I was fortunate to find two NOS JT6's for my Model 6. They were almost given to me, as was the axe.
I don't do the Vai or Gillis type of abuse to it.
No problems w/ it. The pot metal, tones down the Highs a bit, as well as the Graphite nut that is placed before the "lock-down" assembly.
Since it is virtually new, it is tight. It sustains better than all my other w/o tuning problems.
I do love the newer Schaller on my 750xl though, much lighter & compact.

What kind of truck? A real one or one of those sissy import trucks?

WAs it a clean shiny truck or a rusted out beater like you find in NC?

Who made the tires?

And what kind of driveway.. concrete or asphalt?

Was it in the morning or the middle of the day?

Was the OFR personaly assembled by Floyd himself?

Were you drunk or just mildly intoxicated?

Didya shoot it before you ran it over?

Was it a weenie 9 mil round or a decent 105mm SABOT? How 'bout a thirty odd six...

All these factors can affect your test results.

why do you guys think the JT-6's fine tuners are delivered from the hand of god? Is it the placement? I have a bakers dozen of guitars with OFR's and the fine tuners are never a problem. My pick hand never accidently bumps into them...I only had one San Dimas plated Jackson with a JT-6...it was fine but I went for consistency and dropped an OFR in there...I also think the JT-6 is an eye sore but it functioned well.

Of course it's the placement, thilly.

Seriously, it all depends on one's playing style.

I just happen to think that the JT6 has a cleaner profile than the old OFR.

I tend to have my palm way back for mutes and other things, so having the fine tuners out of the way helps me.

I also think it looks better.

The fine tuners seem to have a wider range of adjustment as well.

I think it was a great design that was (arguably), poorly executed.

Kahlers are excellent trems, though different from a Floyd, and not at all a POS. If you don't know how to use 'em, yeah you'll have problems, but at least you can adjust intonation a lot more easily, don't have to use shims to adjust
string height, and can adjust string spacing as well. For some usages Kahler is better than a Floyd, notably as far as
staying in tune with unison bends or if you break a string. For OTT abuse the Floyd is a better choice. As I always say, a crescent wrench is sturdier than a socket wrench, but try changing your spark plugs with a crescent wrench!
Ron is the MAN!!!!
