  • Newbie and a new to me Charvel

    Hi
I've been lurking for a bit learning about the different Charvels before I got my first one, a white Charvel 650 that is is nearly mint condition. Here is the serial number, C000164.

What more can anybody tell me about it?

    Thanks

This is a 650 Custom that would have been made very early in 1990. Basically, a Japanese reproduction of the US-made Jackson Soloist, with a rosewood fretboard rather than the ebony board used on the USA guitars. Very high-quality kickass guitar. The model evolved from the Charvel Model 6 that was produced between 1986-88, which had slightly different features (different trem and toggle switches rather than blade-style pickup switch). The 650xl/Custom was made between 1989-91--in 1992, Jackson stopped making most of their Japanese Charvels altogether in favor of an expanded Japanese Jackson Professional line, and the 650 was replaced by the Jackson Soloist XL, which was updated to reflect some of the features on the then-current USA Soloist.

Your guitar, if stock, has a Jackson J-50 bridge pickup, and Jackson J-200's in the neck/middle positions. The pickups are passive, but are routed through a battery-operated mid-boost circuit known as the JE-1200. Opinions vary on the pickups, but the mid-boost is a neat feature. I've removed it from the Charvels I've had simply because I put active EMG pickups in, which probably wouldn't work with the JE-1200.
