Well, first I want to let you be aware that the 750XL was imported from Japan for the short time they were built, not made in the USA. If I remeber correctly, the 750XL didn't include active electronics stock.
I verified that this is from the factory electronics. It seems that Charvel/Jackson at the time put pretty much any sort of pickup mfg. that they could find in this guitar...
Here is some info:
The active electronics on this Jackson/Charvel guitar boost the pickup
level, for less noise at the amp. [By comparison, most active electronics
on recently made bass guitars allow boost and cut on treble and bass EQ's.]
The five way pickup switch works as follows:
(1) neck pickup only
(2) neck and bridge in parallel
(3) neck and bridge in series ("normal" both on)
(4) neck and bridge in parallel, plus filter
(5) bridge pickup only
Our own JCFer Charvel750 would know all to be known about that guitar. Find a
thread he's posted on, click on his name
to go to his profile, then click on "send
private message" to PM him about it. I think his email addy is listed there too,
but at least you can PM him from the profile!
Yes, Charvel750 is definately the man to talk to about these. He helped me out a lot with information. Also there is a thread here that has a lot of information on the 750XL as well.
There are a lot of people, myself included that rate this as one of the best Charvels ever, I got mine about 3 weeks ago and love it.
I felt summoned! Yeah, the 750 is the finest Charvel, but not USA made. Unlikely it came from the factory with active electronics, and I was unaware that Charvel "put pretty much any sort of pickup mfg. that they could find in this guitar." The only factory pickups I've ever heard of in this guitar were the Jackson models, usually a J-50 and sometimes a J-80. Perhaps some pictures could help us determine the case with yours. By the way, what "factory" did you verify this information through? The Charvel plant was in Japan...
"Got a crazy feeling I don't understand,
Gotta get away from here.
Feelin' like I shoulda kept my feet on the ground
Waitin' for the sun to appear..."
750XL's were made only in 1989 and they were made in Japan. Charvel never "at the time put pretty much any sort of pickup mfg. that they could find" never, never, never. All Japanese Charvels had Jackson pickups.
There's an excellent thread in the Import Charvel section on 750XL's that will tell you everything you ever wanted to know and then some:
750xl did not have active electronics. The stock J-80 & J-50 had black plastic p/u covers that make em look like EMG's - but aren't.
What was unusual was the Jackson 5-way megaswitch that allowed for PRS style p/u wiring.
I just got a new megaswitch for xmas! Mine has been soooo beaten, ...
I also got the SD pickup boost circuit from Guitar Electronics. It works just like the J-1000, except the gain control is wired to a 25k pot (instead of a mini pot in the cavity).
So, by this time next week - my 750 WILL be active (with the stock p/u's).
I imagine it will sound better than the stock PU's in the Charvel, but that is because I hate those things, that is: I can't say much about the j*0, but the J50Bc IMO sucks donkeyballs with midbooster and without the midbooster it is even worse.
So, I think your guitar will come to live with the SD PU's (at least my "6" did when I replaced them)
I find the 750 has pretty good top end with it's maple top, but the stock pickups were rather muddy in comparison to aftermarkets without an EQ change when I was switching off in my rig with other guitars loaded with Seymour and Dimarzio's.
JB's-59's JB-Jazz combos are pretty decent all around pickups good for many applications, certainly can't go wrong for most styles as that combo is quite popular. You might find the JB to be a little too top end, but it can alwys be rolled back. Again, it's a matter of personal preference. If you like the JB already, you should like it in the 750.
Well, I just bought a 750XL about 6 hours ago... it truley is an amazing guitar.
The Bridge pup was changed to a DiMarzio Mega Drive... Not overly pleased with it there... I'm going to be moving it to the neck position and installing a DiMarzio Evolution that I have laying around into the bridge slot... I have to track down the previous owner to get the original pup and covers from him... I hope he still has them!
