  • New member with an ID question

Anyone know what model this Charvel is. My wife bought it for me back in the 80's must have been around 86 to 88. It has a pick guard it just isn't on it. Pickguard would cover the neck p/u.

    Thanks

That Desert Crackle finish was very common back then.

Thanks for the info guys. Gonna take the router to the bridge p/u and put a humbucker in there. And the crappy electonics gotta go. I love the neck on this guitar and the body is nice also, but I hate the tone from this thing.

The spectrum had a pre amp for the pickups, have you got a good battery in there? If not the tone will be different. The pickups are not active but work thru the pre amp.A nice original spectrum is getting hard to find. That should be an 89 or 90(small toothpaste logo)

Re: New member with an ID question

Thanks for the input...Yea, I have the battery in it.(if the battery gets a little weak the tone really goes down. The preamp is what I dislike about it though. My wife bought it for me as a christmas gift. (Her heart was in the right place) It is not a guitar I would have bought for myself. I played it for several years because at the time she bought it. My only other guitar was a Guild X79-3 and I had totally worn it out. needed a fret job and other work. So I dealt with the tone the way it was because I didn't want to alter the guitar. I know there are those out there that would love the tone of this guitar but it just isn't for me. The neck is very nice.(Great Neck) and I think the body wood is popular? So I think with a humbucker in the bridge position and maybe a couple new s/c's with that preamp out. The guitar could have a very nice tone. Or one that I like. Being that it was a gift from my wife, selling it is out of the question or I would have dumped it years ago.

Instead of routing out the body for a humbucker, try a HotRails pup from Seymour Duncan. They can really sizzle...
