• Humbucker question

80's charvel model 5, bought used. It has a OBL humbucker, did they come with this or was this an add on.
Thanks

Re: Humbucker question

The only pickups I've ever seen come in a Model 5 were a pair of J80C's and they ran through the built in J1200 preamp. The preamp "piggybacked" the volume pot. Are you looking for these? If so, shoot me an email,

Pretty sure your guitar would have originally had a Jackson J90 or J95. Is it a 1 HB (Model 5A) or the 2 HB version of the Model 5?

Seriously, my model 5 has two J90Cs in it, and I bought it from Budman.

Re: Humbucker question

It has 2 single pickups and 1 humbucker, with 5 position switch and 3 knobs. Says OBL on base of humbucker. I was told it is a model 5. Serial is 230309 so I know it is a mid 80's and is bolt-on. I noticed I haven't seen anyone like it with an OBL.

It almost sounds like a 475 Charvel. Does it have a Charvel toothpaste logo or the Charvel logo that is shaped like a guitar? Any pics would help. Model 5's had 2 hums and 3 knobs with a 5 way switch but they were a neck through, not bolt on.

Re: Humbucker question

OBL pickups are older "Original Bill Lawrence". I've seen some Gibsons with those pickups. They look like EMGs but have OBL etched on them. Someone obviously changed the pickups in your guitar. Though, there were some older Jacksons and Charvels that had imitation Bill Lawrence blade pickups and not made by the real Bill Lawrence.

That is an '86 Model 3 with what looks like a Model 1 neck. It should have had a J80C.

Actually the model 1Cs didn't have pickguards. That would be a Model 1a with a modded pickguard.

The 86 Model 3 had the Kahler fulcrum tremolo.

Ahhh that's right, I forgot about the 1C not having the pickguard. I'll bet Tekky is right. BTW Tekky, great job on the MOAIP! You da man!

My bad. I looked at the pics again and see that is is indeed a vintage trem, not a Kahler.
