  • Is this a Model 5 FX?

First time posting. I have a bunch of questions but I guess I should start with asking the experts: "What's my Model?"

I am embarrassed to say that I bought this guitar new back in the day and don't know the Model number. From what I've seen in JCF I am guessing it's an '88 Model 5FX.

    Pic: http://jsa.freeshell.org/jsagtr.jpg
    Serial: C804870
It's neck through, 24 fret, diagonal single coil at the neck, humbucker at the bridge, JT6 trem, "R" on the Charvel decal.

It used to have a single volume knob, but I replaced it with a inner/outer-style knob for tone and volume without drilling a new hole.
I also replaced the 3-way switch with a 5-way rotary when I replaced a dead pickup for one that had more wiring options.

Before the minor mods it looked a lot like Pete's black '88 5FX guitar in this photo in the JCF gallery: http://www.jcfonline.com/gallery/cha...00163-pete.jpg

    What do you guys think?

Yep, 5FX, but somebody routed out a cavity to pull back on the trem.

didn't some of them come with the partial recess? So it's still effectively non-recessed, but with room to pull up?

Hmmm. It was originally a Model 5A, and they weren't recessed. Maybe when the select few got sent back to the factory and the neck pup added to become the 5FX (as well as some getting a tone control) they did a recess?

It came new with the trem recess. You'd really have to want to torture the strings to pull up the trem far enough to bottom it out. Anyway, I really hate the pinging sounds when I do that.

100% correct! The 3DRs had the same route.

Thanks everybody for the ID confirmation. The info about the trem recess actually leads into my next question about possibly "blocking out" the trem for a newbie guitarist (sacrilege?) but that discussion should really be in a separate thread.

check the sticky at the top of the Tech section. There's a handy article about blocking trems there. No sacrilege to do it. Plenty of folks here do it. Well, the soft ones who can't handle a trem do anyway....
