• Charvel Jman body and neck

Hi

I currently have a Jman, and was looking for a new guitar to get a different, more Knopfler/Hendrix/Gilmour style tone. So naturally I went strat shopping and I realised that I can't play any strats or ANY guitar that has a finished neck because its just too sticky and I like my unfinished Jman neck because my hand can just glide...

So naturally I have been turned off strats, but still want the tone, so what i was thinking was using my jman neck (24 fret) with a strat copy body. (actually I really wanted a charvel star body but this'll probably be too hard). So what I'm asking is, how can I tell what precut bodies will automatically fit my Jman neck (keeping in mind its 24 fret)? Like warmoth or stewmac?

Any help appreciated!!
Thanks

I reckon you're asking for problems trying to fit a Journeyman neck to an after market Strat body. The J-man neck butts to the body at the 24th fret, Strat necks do this just after the 21st fret. The shape of the neck end is different as well.

No, if your only problem is the neck finish then try a used G&L Legacy. Their standard neck finish is satin, like the Journeyman. They are hand made in Fullerton Califonia and go for stupidly low money used. For example, my G&L Legacy Special, which has a two piece swamp ash body, birdseye maple neck, rosewood board, locking sperzel tuners and three dual blade single-coil sized humbuckers cost me US$400 used a couple of years ago. A straight Legacy is probably the guitar you want for Knopfler/Gilmour country.

Yeah, the Journeyman is satin finished. THe only guitar with an unfinished neck I own is a Yamaha Mike Stern Signature, which plays great but needs the finger spooge cleaning off of it at regular intervals This could also be because out of thirty guitars the Yamaha is my "go to". Great neck, but as it's Tele-derived and has two humbuckers you're not into Strat territory at all with it!

The sticky neck syndrome of new guitars can actually be alleviated by the use of very fine steel wool to matt up the neck's finish. I know guys that have done this with Fender's vintage guitars to good effect.

this is interesting, but the strange thing is i was only playing second hand fenders at the store today, and they still stuck to my palm.. i guess i hit the jackpot with my journeyman, it really is the most comfortable neck i've played!!

those G&Ls don't look too shabby at all, but i think that for the price, i could get an american strat (at least in australia).. if only the store owners would let me use that steel wool trick

Ah. I Didn't realise that you wre in Oz. Yeah, prices are a whole different story down there. Hell, it's just as bad as Kuala Lumpur in fact! I bought my G&L Legacy from a mate in the USA and got it shipped surface. My total cost including shipping & taxes was US$500. We have 10% sales tax here in Malaysia, which is all that needs to be paid on an imported guitar.
