• Help me pick a set of pups for my Charvel

Hello:
I have a Charvel 375 with a H-S-S configuration. I'm planning to take all of them out including the active electronics and replace them with passive pups. I looking for a good Rock tone i.e., somewhere between Blues and Metal. I already have plenty o' shredders.

What would you recommend as a set?

Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder in the neck (flat pole)
Seymour Duncan Virtual Vintage or a Dimarzio HS-2 in the middle
Seymour Duncan JB or a Custom Custom in the bridge.
I also like the Dimarzio Norton, Air Norton or the PAF Pro in the bridge. They all mix very well with stacked singles.

For my guitars that have that pickup configuration I went with:

Neck: Little '59
Middle: Duckbucker
Bridge: Distortion

Neck: Hot Rail
Middle: Cool Rail
Bridge: Distortion

I'm very happy with both setups but like the Rails better.

i have the dimarzio "super3" in the bridge, that gives you a very warm tone. a few weeks ago i tested the dimarzio "steve´s spezial" in my 375 and that really sounding like a heavy metal axe! very scooped sound and high output.

i still use the two stock SCs.

My two with that set up are as follows:

Neck: Hot Rails
Middle: Cool Rails
Bridge: Distortion

Neck: Li'l '59
Middle: Li'l '59
Bridge: JB

The first config is definitely my favorite. It covers rock, shred, metal, and the Cool Rails helps with some nice blues tones also. The second config is more of a straight up rock sound with some nice clean tones as I have all pickups split for single coil use. Either one would be good for what you would want. Also keep in mind a Duncan Custom for the bridge. I put that in my basswood body Ibanez 7-string and with a little bit of tweaking to the adjustable poles, that thing screams!

Is there some routing that has to be done to the slots of the single coil positions on the body to fit replacement pups? My model 6 will not fit any replacements( e.g. SD classic stacks) because of the ears at the base of pup being too wide for slot routed in body. What are you guys doing with that? Thanks, Bob

I did not have that problem it fits perfectly.

I use different brands of PU's together. In my 6 have this±

SD lil screamin demon (neck)
SD lil 59 (middle)
Dimarzio Steve's Special.

The lil screamin demon gives a really sweat tone. The lil 59 will be replaced by I don't know what yet (possibly a stack of some brand)
The SS gives a tight rock tone, it has a lot of output, but it is spread over a wide range of frequencies, so it is not really a high output PU in a traditional way: result: tight rock/metal sound.

I had the same demands as you have in mind when I choose this config.

Hello Harrald, if you look at the base of the lil' screamin demon and the lil' 59, they do not have the traditional base of other standard single coils that have that ear at the bottom where the coil wires are soldered. These type that I'm talkin about will not fit the routed area that fits the J-200 pups or the SD mini humbuckers. Bob
