  • Charvel Spectrum/Jeff Beck

    first, the pic of my latest Charvel Conquest:

    Now, the question - mainly pointed at Charvel 750 or anyone else who knows: Did they make these in H/S/S along with the S/S/S pickup configs? Or was adding a humbucker in the bridge a popular aftermarket modification? Just curious... and for bonus points, if the HB in the bridge was factory, what did that make the model? A Spectrum A? Uhh I have no idea about the answer to your question but I do know that that's one of the Marshall amps like Criss Oliva used!

      Yeah, I bought that head same day I bought the Charvel... and it's already for sale. My idea was to mod it, but it's untouched inside, and I'd rather get a sovtek or something like that to rework. It sounds really good as is.

        Pete, nice Charvel and Marshall rig there! The Spectrums were all three single coil J-200's. I had a Desert Crackle Spectrum (in the Gallery) with a humbucker at the bridge but it was routed aftermarket. I think Sully had one with a Hot Rails in the bridge, and I would wager that would sound very humbuckerish. Great guitars for sure.

          BUT...They had a kinda UNIQUE FEATURE as well...

          {from the C/J '90-'91 catalog}

          "The Spectrum is Charvels proof that technology is limited only to the imagination. The central innovation that the Spectrum is built around is the active JE-1500 para mid EQ tone circuit preamp with in/out bypass switch. Greek to you ? Well, that's a mid frequency sweep, like a wah pedal - built into the guitar ! Just by turning a knob, you can select the exact mid level frequency you want, and boost it right out of the stratosphere. That's tone control, through thick or thin like you've never had before. And for a squeaky clean, warm timbre with absolutely no noise, the Spectrum is equipped with three Jackson J-200 bi-level humbuckers.These are two coils stacked on top of each other, so to a string it's a single coil, it's a bucker of 60 cycle hum - totally noise-free"

            <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">yeah, my black one has a hotrails in it...it's more humbuckery, but is't not one of my better sounding guitars, which sucks.
