Is this a prototype then... a misleading catalog picture?

Yep, there were a lot of protoypes in that catalog including the open coil pickups and the red model 6 on the cover and white one in the centerfold that had standard sized humbucker rings (as well as the other models) and "lipped" style single coil routes (as well as the model 4).

by the way, that bullseye looks great!
