I just acquired an original Charvel (ca. 1992) 12-string Surfcaster that needs a little work. Any tips or info would be appreciated.
First, the neck has a little too much relief for my ideal setup. It's at about .016" now. I'd like to pull it down to .010". I've already given the truss rod 1/2 turn. I'm a little reluctant to keep cranking on it unless I know I can get where I want to go. If you have a 12-string, how is your relief set?
Second, it currently has 3 different types of tuners; 9 originals and 2 different types of aftermarkets. Moreover, two of the originals are real sloppy. I'd like to replace all of them. The original tuners have a 1.06" (27 mm) peg; available replacements (Gotoh, etc.) have a .965" (24.5 mm) peg. See http://www.squinkies.com/images/guitar/gotoh.jpg for a diagram. The long peg is need to get the string hole through the headstock; the replacements have the hole flush with the bushing. The only thing I can find that looks the same and doesn't require drilling the headstock is the Gotoh SD90-HAP (Height Adjustable Post). The trouble with them is that it's a 8-12 week lead time from Allparts. So:
- Who made the original tuners, and are they still available?
- Any other suggestions?
Thanks.
