  • Third Knob on a Charvel Model 6

I know that the third knob on a Charvel Model 6 (or 5, or 4, for that matter) from the 1986 era was some sort of mid-sweep thing.

I love the way my Model 6 sounds, but want to try a similar set up with my Fender Strat. Does anybody make something similar to the third knob found on the older Charvel's?

Is the EMG-SPC similar, or do I need another model (RPC or EXG) to achieve similar results?

    Thanks!!!!

The third knob is an active tone for the mid-boost system that was installed on model 6's/650 XL's. You could get an old system like those on the Charvels. I know a few people have yanked them out. There are companies out there that make active electronics. Just look around.

The EMG SPC control should be similar to the Jackson midboost. I had a Model 6 that was pretty awesome, I loved that midboost!!! It's just a mid boost and cut, not a sweep like a wah. Also, the EMG VMC control (Variable Mid Control), which is one of their circuits for bass guitar, is on a concentric pot and works for Mid/Freq/EQ of the midrange, and that's something I really want to try out. Most of their guitar and bass circuits are fine for active or passive pickups on both guitars and basses.

If you want an actual mid sweep system like a wah, check out the Chandler Tone-X. I actually just bought one from Musicians Friend, which is basically the guts of a wah pedal on a little circuit board. I put it in my Warrior, and it kicks ass!!! It's a push/pull pot... pull it up and it gives you a boost (I think it's up to 16 dB, but I'm not sure offhand at the moment). You turn the knob to sweep through the frequencies high to low, just like a wah pedal, and you can even set it in one position to use it like a fixed wah. When the knob is pushed down, it's totally passive and doesn't affect your normal signal whatsoever. It's pretty similar to the midsweep system that Jackson used in the old Warriors, except they used a toggle switch to turn on.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

And, Joe, what you just described is exactly what Jackson's JE-1500 circuit did. It was a wah/envelope filter. Came stock on Jackson USA Fusions and Warriors in the early 1990's. Instead of a push/pull it had a mini toggle. These circuits pop up from time to time on eBay and can be as expensive as $50 in some of the auctions I've seen.

That is correct, Dave. The Spectrum used it too.
