• Why can't I put a 24-fret neck on my Model 2 body?

I was told that it would not intonate properly, and that I would need to route the neck pocket more.

But I thought that the intonation was all adjusted at the bridge, and if the neck is the same 25.5" scale, what gives?

Reason being is I have a sweet Model 2 body and a nice 24 fret 25.5" scale jackson neck lying around that are just begging to be mated.

Can I do this without having to get another body for this neck???

You don't trust me eh bro? It just won't work without routing the body my friend. The length of scale is off too far for any bridge adjustment

what about the reverse? can you put a 22 fret neck on a body that had a 24 fret neck on it?

Re: Why can\'t I put a 24-fret neck on my Model 2 body?

No -- The scale is based on the measurement from the nut to the bridge. If you compare a 22 fret neck with a 24 fret neck of the same scale you will see that the 24 fret neck is longer. The distance from the nut to the 22 fret will be the same on both necks. Putting a 24 fret neck in a 22 fret neck body will change the distance from the nut to the bridge thus altering the scale. The same applies to putting a 22 fret neck on a body that was made for a 24 fret neck. There are some exceptions to this rule, take a Warmoth neck for example. If you look at their 24 fret necks they just extend the fingerboard so it is designed to go on body made for 22 frets.

I'm sure all of this is about as clear as mud. Perhaps someone here can explain it better than I can.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Check E-Bay... You can probably find your neck and a body for the neck you have.

The 24-fret 25-1/2" neck is about 3/4" longer than the 22-fret 25-1/2" neck because of the 2 extra frets. On a Model 2 body, that makes the nut 26-1/4" from the saddles with that 24-fret neck.. Since the saddles only have about 1/2" of range, you can't adjust them far enough forward to intonate the guitar.

You have to get that nut 3/4" closer to the bridge. You can do that 3 ways: cut out 3/4" from the neck pocket, cut out 3/4" of the neck heel leaving only the fretboard for the last 2 frets, like Warmoth does, or reroute the body to move the bridge 3/4" forwarrd. Of these 3 methods, cutting the neck pocket is the easiest, and you don't ruin the neck in case you ever wanted to put it on a different guitar. Better to ruin a basswood Model 2 body than a decent 24-fret sharkfin neck.

Although, a Fusion neck might work for you since it's 24-3/4" scale - 3/4" shorter than the 25-1/2' scale 24-fret neck, but the same length as the 25-1/2" 22-fret Model 2 neck. Jim Shine mentioned that he'd done that before, though I haven't done it myself. The math would indicate that it'd work.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Check the math again.
If the distance from the nut to the bridge is 24-3/4" with the shorter scale neck it will work. If the distance is going to be 25-1/2" then it will not work because the fret spacing on a 24-3/4 neck is different than a 25-1/2 scale. This would be like taking the existing 22 fret 25-1/2 scale neck and cramming in an extra 2 frets by moving all the frets closer together.

So what if it were 25", and you had 1/4" forward play with your bridge saddles?

That's also why I said "might".

Thanks alot dudes! Some great info thank you. Now it is all clear to me

I think I will find another body for my 24 fret neck and see if I can find a 22 fret neck for this body and do it right.

Did Jackson or Charvel ever make a single hum 24-fret body?

Sorry I was stubborn Budman!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's only their 24.75" scale necks with 24 frets that will fit (they have the same amount of overhang on the board as the 22 frets). They also charge an extra $50 to position the bridge closer for the shorter scale. The 25.5" scale neck with extended fingerboard puts the extra two frets up a little and it will interfere with the neck pickup.

You have a point bud As long you had enough room on your saddles to convert it into a 24-3/4 scale it would work
