Well, I just checked my 86 catalog and all the bolt ons are basswood and the neckthroughs are rock maple with poplar wings. Now the bass bolt on bodies were poplar with maple necks and the Model 3B bass was also rock maple neckthrough with poplar wings.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Go to the Carvin website and look at their guitars; there's usually a koa model in there. You'll know looking at that if yours is koa, but if yours is, it was probably made for a artist or an employee or something. Also, why paint over beautiful koa? You never know though.

        1986 model series

Does anyone know if the first model series guitars used any other wood besides basswood? I'm curious because my 86 model 3a weighs a whopping 9.4lbs. My model 4 (thanks tekky) weighs in at 7.2lbs. I would think that the swimming pool route in the first 3As would make them fairly light since there is less mass copared to some of the other models. The only guitar that I have owned that weighs more was an old 1977 strat all maple.
