• Charvel Charvette

Hey guys....I just acquired yet another guitar for FREE so now I need to know as much about it as possible. It's a black Charvel Charvette serial #
0010417 on a black Ft. Worth,Tx. neck plate.
rosewood fretboard, pearl dots, maple? neck, locking nut, pointy headstock w/allen/hex wrench holder on back of headstock,Original Floyd Rose whammy,1 humbucker in bridge,1 angled single coil at headstock(like a Fusion Deluxe)1 volume, and 1 3-position switch. All of the hardware is black, and the pickups have black plastic smooth covers w/Charvel by Charvel/Jackson in white.
I'm assuming it's an import, but that's why I'm asking you guys. Body style looks like a Dinky, not a strat. So where was it built, what year, and were there any other specific names to the Charvette?
ie: model 4 or 4A...using that as an example.
Thanks again guys!

As for the trem being a Floyd Rose, that is not original, I'll guarantee you that. Yes, it is an import, and either Japanese or Korean. You can tell by the spacing of the dots at the 12th fret. Apparently Japanese made Charvettes have the closer spaced dots, and the Koreans are wider spaced. The Charvettes had model numbers, but no names. Mine is a hum/single/single and it's a model 270RR. So other than the pickup configuration, it's the same as yours.

hey...cut me some slack,it was like 3am when i posted that. angled single coil at the neck....that better?
the Floyd Rose has to be original...there are no markings or new routings to indicate any different.
all the original paint is still in tact.no chips dings or scratches in that area.
is there a sort of rubber type pad under the whammy on your guitar?it's under the back end of the OFR and runs up along the very sides of it to the mounting posts of the OFR.it looks factory because it's a perfect fit.
this guitar was found in an abandoned HUD house and given to someone i know who in turn gave to it to me because he doesn't play guitar.i doubt it's likely that whoever had it in that house was able to afford to have anything done to it.
the 12th fret dots are closer to the edges of the neck than they are to each other.
anyway,i can't complain,it was a FREEBIE!

Rory,
As far as I can make out, it seems that you have a Korean (Due to the wider spaced dots as opposed to the one in the photo) model 170. The original trem was a Jackson JT6 unit which has been replaced on yours with an OFR. (In my opinion, far superior)

Re: Charvel Charvette

well it honestly doesn't look like the trem has been replaced....but like you said....it's a far superior one.
yep...FREE is ALWAYS good!!
it's not in bad condition, but not great either...several small chips in the paint around the edges of the body, and some surface rust on the heads of the fine tuners and on the allen/hex screws on the trem, some rust on the hum screws,it's missing the larger allen/hex wrench, surface rust on the locking nut screws,it's missing the little knob for the blade switch, and the very tip of the headstock is gone.
but at least it hasn't been abused as badly as my Jackson-necked custom body
i plugged it into my "Smokey" amp(so i wouldn't wake my landlord),and everything seems to work ok so far.there was some static and it cut out a bit...but i'm not sure if that was from the "smokey" battery being about wore out or if the jack is messed up. i'll check that tomorrow with a real amp and go from there.
other than that, the neck is straight, frets are good, action is decent, fretboard is in good shape, and the whammy bar was actually STILL attached amazingly enough! that's usually the first thing to get lost or removed.hell it even has all 6 strings on it....crappy and almost rusty as they are,i tuned it and so far it's stayed right in there.i'll try and scrounge up some better strings tomorrow as well.
i'll get some pics of it this week.
Thanks again guys for helpin' me out with these 2 guitars of mine.

Re: Charvel Charvette

It seems there is some confusion regarding the floyd. Sounds like Rory is stating that the tremolo is the original trem that came on the guitar, not that the trem is an Original Floyd Rose.
Damn, I love this Interweb.

Re: Charvel Charvette

nope....it is an OFR....but it looks like an original factory install....there are NO chips, scratches, dings, dents,or anything else that one would think might exist from someone changing the trems out.i've looked it over and over and over.
but if it's a replacement...fine with me...OFR's rock IMHO.besides,it's an import,so it's better with the OFR,and maybe i'll change out the pickups and tuners and make it even better.

Re: Charvel Charvette

By the looks of the pic, the 170 came with a JT-6. (chrome bar on black bridge is what I'm basing that off of) To retrofit an Original Floyd from a JT-6 is just a plain and simple switch of tremolos. It's simple, there's no routing or any other work that would need to be done. (besides the intonation) So, no, one would not necessarily notice that the tremolo's been switched unless they knew what it came with originally.

Weren't most of those Charvettes plywood anyway? I think there might have been one or two upgraded models that were alder. Still cool for being free.

i'm not sure what kind of wood the body is,but by the looks of it,from all the chips in it,it doesn't look like plywood.
