They are not bogus guitars by any stretch of the imagination. But, as was mentioned before, the sellers are either misinformed, uninformed, or just plain trying to pull a fast one.

When new, the Japanese Charvels had a "Made in Japan" sticker on them. So, I don't know how much wool the company was pulling over the eyes of the consumer back then (one has to think they were probably hoping for a better reception for the guitars by having a US address on them).

It's only really been since we've moved further away from those guitars being new (and the advent of eBay) that it seems to have become an issue. I guess there were people who bought them in the '80s thinking they were USA guitars, but everyone I knew of at the time knew those Charvels were MIJ.

Yeah, back then, nobody could've predicted the spread of what was to become the Internet. I guess those stickers weren't too permanent!

Hell, I knew a guitar shop owner "Fast Eddy" who would take those little stickers off his stuff the second they came out of the box. I think there was a little understanding, if you know what I mean.

Racer, You bloody bastard!! I was trying to think of that but couldn't quite remember. I think Fast Eddie still has adhesive under his nails..

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Not at all. I was actually surprised to buy a '87 or '88 Model 3 a couple of years back and have it show up with the Made in Japan sticker still on the back.

I bought a Model 2 and a Model 3 new in the '80s, and I took the sticker off each of them pretty early on.

This bothers me less than most people. As long as they are disclosing the Ft. Worth plate, I think it's cool. Why?

With the Internet and Google, you can figure out in 2 seconds that it's MIJ. If you aren't willing to do that amount of due diligence, then you may wind up winning the guitar under false assumptions, but hey you probably paid a decent price for a decent guitar (I've not seen one MIJ Charvel go on eBay for way more than it's worth, so I don't think anyone's getting ripped off).

And if you *do* find out the truth, chances are you're not going to be disappointed. This board has cheered up a lot of new Charvel owners about the fact that their MIJ Charvels are damn fine instruments.

And if they never find out the truth, well, I'm sure they'll stay happy in their ignorance, because ultimately it's a damn fine instrument.

I lived in Fort Worth during the 80's and
                        those Charvels were everywhere.
The "Fort Worth/USA made" confusion started
happening as soon as they started selling those
guitars. Pawn shops would swear that they were
US made and ask crazy prices for them.
