Oh, and by the way -- If anyone can describe the function of the three position toggle in each of its positions, I'd really appreciate it. I can't seem to figure out which position is in-phase, out-of-phase, and - especially - off.

I don't know the answer for the in/out of phase, but an easy way to test for when a coil is on or off is to very gently tap it with a screwdriver blade or allen wrench. Just for the heck of it, I'm going to guess that middle position is off, down is in-phase, and up is out of phase.
