It really depends on the wood. Here is a primer/sealer you could use. but i would think any type would sufice.

Thank you very much for posting all of this. It is guys like you and Mark that inspire others to try their hand at refin jobs.

Nice job (from the pics anyway!) I must say though, sanding blocks are NOT optional in my opinion. Bare finger sanding is an absolute no-no on any flat surfaces. Also, in the third pic, those tubes of 3M glazing putty are junk. They are nothing more than a thick lacquer primer. NEVER use that crap.
When it comes to primers and fillers, it MUST be a two component catalyzed product...or you're in for some dissapointments down the road.
Soooooooo....cool internet pics of random products......but ummmm ok.
Did you actually do this work, or are you just trying to impress someone who doesn't know better?

I agree with mm2002, you should never do bare finger sanding, always use a sanding block otherwise you will get an uneven surface and it will show in the finish, that goes for any surface! Don't know about the putty, i have to use products on sale in the U.K.

              Edited.
I saw your first post, nice constructive criticism, then you go and open your pie hole again to add to your original post to ask if i am trying to impress someone. I dont need to impress anyone thank you. Like my post stated, I didnt have the pictures any longer so i searched the net for pictures to help visually. I was asked to post my process, if you have a different method, why not post it instead of asking me ridiculous questions and being an ass.

Yes, I'm an ass who sometimes doesn't know when to keep the 'ol pie hole closed......everyone already knows that.
So anyway, let me re-phrase the question in a little more poilite manner:
Do you do all the work yourself, and do you use all of the products in those pictures?

Yes, I did all the work but had my friend do the actual spraying. Its his shop and he is better than I am at it. The picture of the putty isnt what i used, thats the only pic i could find of filler. I used a 2 part compound, there was the putty (blue i think) and the hardener. It dries fast. By the time i got to the last ding to fill it in, the putty was too hard. So i had to mix more.

As far as finger sanding.. If you know what you are doing, it isnt an issue. However, working with wood, it is a good idea to use a block.

Well said AzPilot! until you actually restore a guitar you don't realise how much time and effort it takes...Some like graphics on guitars and some don't, personal choice really but having said that I'm not one for the transfers they stick on guitars, cheap and nasty...and for someone to do something hand done is far better...enjoy it....look forward to seeing the next one!
