Sometimes I will play a guitar that makes me think..."wow, this sounds and feels better than my 750XL!"...and I get a little downtrodden. But then I get home, pick the XL up, play a few licks and go..."Naah!!!" Sometimes I feel that the short scale + mahogany sounds a little "unrefined", but it has so much balls and is such joy to play that everything else is forgiven at the end of the day!

Really, the only problem I have with the shorter scale is the fret spacing above the first octave. Things get a little tight up there for me. My fingers get all jumbled up and run into each other. My goal in life is to be the kind of asshole my wife thinks I am.

I love mine as well. It easily hangs with my LP's. I haven't heard the original pickups. Mine has the Distortion Mayhem set with a Super 5 way (the 'E' megaswitch from stewmac) and I added a push/pull to reverse phase in the middle position. It covers all of the bases.
Downside? Too few of them. I'd like to get an archtop Pro to compliment it.

750 is heavy (that's a minus in my book)
Stock pickups are horrible
scale length on those guitars just sound muddy to my ears, even with switched out pickups. They are made very well, but tone-wise a les paul (IMO) beats them.
I'd recommend a jackson archtop soloist pro over the 750s just because they are thinner and lighter.

I agree that the sound has a bit too much of bottom-end mud to it. It's annoying sometimes, but apart from that, I love the overall tone. If I had still been playing thrash, I probably would've preferred the Model 6 for its clearer bottom end.
Btw, I mentioned earlier in this thread how I actually liked the J80C pickup when put in my Model 6. I'm about to change my mind on that point now, because it sounds absolutely pathetic through my new Marshall - all weak and "farty" on the bass strings.
The 750XL with the Duncans sounds even greater through the Marshall than before though.

There really are no downsides to my 750. When i got it used from a friend he had a JB and a custom Custom in it. I pulled the JB and moved the custom custom to the bridge and put a J50n in the neck. Its clear articulate and plays awsome. Has plenty of gain and tone without being muddy or loose in the bottom end. It's my Paul on steriods with a Floyd.

Never heard the stock pickups.
I have 4 LP's, and each sounds different. My 750XL is closest to my R0, my #1 axe. I would have a hard time choosing an LP over the 750XL - they are very close in my book. I've definitely heard "turd" LP's that the 750XL would kick ass over, just like there might be less than stellar 750XL's out there. Mine is a fixed bridge, and I'm sure that's part of it's charm.
