What a pleasure to find a supportive forum with such a treasure trove of information 
on my guitar.
I have a 88 model 3 (Alwaya thought it was an '87 until I got here!) which
has served me well the past 12 years. I had a '73 Gibson L6S (single
cutaway twin super hums) and was looking for more of a cut through
sound, A friend down on the Cape where I had been living had bought a
ivory Model 5 and I just loved it's sound. I found a beautiful dk blue
Model 6 at Lark Street music, but couldn't talk the seller down any lower
than the 600 he wanted (I had nothing left to sell either, trust me!)
Living up north of Albany NY as I do it's hard to find any of these guitars
anymore, but some months later I found my model 3. Some kid had had it
and the setup was totally f*cked up...strings were half an inch off the fretboard...
nobody at Drome Sound had thought to fix it. I could see that the neck was straight
and all the electronics worked fine...They thought it was a Model 5 so I brought
in my '87 catalog and proved it was a 3 and talked them down a couple hundred
to $350 and brought it home.
I subscribed to a guitar newsletter which I had found listed in GP or GW. I
forget who wrote it, but it was entitled "It's fun to work on your guitar"
The author had services rebuilding valve amps for the "brown" sound
but put out electronic and customizing tips in the newsletter for free.
I had discovered that the bridge j90C Humbucker was set up for multi-tapping...
and I wasn't satisfied with the options of the five
way switch after playing with the Model 6. Soooooo.
I play rhythm and lead slide.
