  • I need to ID and fix this Charvel help please!

Hey guys maybe you can help me. I need to ID this Charvel, it has a bad vol pot and I dont know where to get the replacement. Looking at the headstock I'de have to say its an import. Ill list as much info as I think is necessary if theres anything else that would help let me know.

    White
    neck thru
    binding on neck and headstock
    24 frets
    sharkfin inlays
    Painted Charvel logo (black)
    Schaller-made Jackson floyd
    Jackson pickups hum/sc/sc
    two vol one tone
    Jackson tuners
    blank truss-rod cover
    serial # C900710
Vol knob is mounted to a circuit board (this is the part that I need to replace.)

Ill work on getting some pictures up tomorrow, for now see what you guys can do. I'de really appreciate it you guys have been very helpfull in the past. Thanks,

'89 650XL. The volume pot is a 50K pot. It can be very tricky to remove the old one & solder a new one directly to the board. It might be possible to remove the old pot & wire a new one to the board with jumpers. I've never tried to do either of those. Another option would be to find a used circuit (JE-1200 midboost circuit) with a good pot on eBay, but it seems like a good majority of these old circuits have issues after close to 20 years. Have you tried cleaning the pot with contact cleaner?

That's a Charvel 650 XL. If it is stock, it should have the JE-1200 active mid-boost in it, so replacing the pot could be a bit more complicated than in a normal "passive" guitar.

Edit: DG beat me to it.

Thanks guys. The ckt board is toast. I need the whole assembly I'm pretty adept at soldering etc. but I'de rather just replace the whole thing if possible, is there anywhere else besides ebay that I might find the board?

They don't make them any more. Unfortunately, eBay is definitely the best place to find one. I think I've only seen a couple in the classifieds here in the last three years. If you have any plans to upgrade the pickups, the circuit really isn't necessary. Just put in new pots with the new pickups & you're set. The stock singles (actually stacked hums) really need the circuit not to sound like ass, though.

No problem. Hope you get it up & running soon! Those are great guitars & it should be able to hang with just about anything when you're done fixing it up.
