  • Help With Identificating of a CHARVEL Japan

    Hails Guys
i´m about to trade my IBANEZ S1220 PRESTIGE, for a CHarvel guitarra
The owner says that it is Made In Japan, and he claims that the model is a Charvel 650XL or 650 CUSTOM.
the neck and headstock has a binding as you can see in the pic.
He says that the neck woody is Maple, neck thru, and the body is either Alder or Poplar Wings(but i think it can alsobe basswood?!!?).
    serial is C000347

Heres the pics . it has a Schaller Made for Jackson Floyd Rose. 3 knobs,H-S-S JACKSON passive pickups with an active Circuit. and he refinished the paint job.

This was the previous paint job.
White crackle with the old Tooth paste logo.
now he put the New one.

can you give me some more accurate infos on this guitars?
    1 - if its legit
    2 - which woods
3 - which model exactly it is..and if is usa or japan.

    Any other infos needed?!
    Let Me Know
    Hails and Thank´s in Advance

Welcome to the JCF! I can't give you much info on that particular guitar, but I wish the previous owner would have kept the original white crackle finish..!
Although, that's just my taste Anyway I hope you will like it here as much as I do! Enjoy

sounds like the guy is being honest with you.

It's a 1990 Charvel 650 made in Japan. I can't remember if they were calling it a Custom or XL that year, but they are the same guitar. They didn't use basswood for the neckthru guitars, so it would have a maple neck with either alder or poplar wings as the seller stated.
      Hail yesterday

        Looks legit to me.

        Maple neckthrough with poplar wings.

650XL was the name in '89. 650 Custom is the exact same guitar, but the name was changed in the '90/'91 catalog. You may be able to tell the year by the serial number stamped below the 24th fret. If it starts with C9xxxxx, it is an '89. Not sure what they did after that, but someone else might know. -edit- Gary knows, C0xxxxx makes it a '90.

        Catalog scan for '89:

        '90/'91:

It's a 90 650 Custom in Desert Crackle. Almost looks like a Model series now but no Charvel Model line had these specs.

The guitar shaped logo is actually the "old" logo, the toothpaste logo was later. And there were Charvels with those specs in the Japanese only market. But we know of course it was a 650 originally...

Did any 650XL/Custom ever come stock with the old guitar logo?

The guy looks like he did an excellent job refinishing it!
Although it would be worth more in the original desert crackle finish.

It'll still play the same though. Meaning awesome!!!

Looks like a good trade in your favour. Neckthrough =

As far as I know, the old guitar logo died out the same year the Model series was stopped and the 650 was started. So no, pretty sure no 650XL/Custom came with the old logo.

You might run across one of these Japan-market-only guitars from the '89 Japanese catalog. The HSS model is pretty much a 650 with the old logo & non-matching headstock:

I'd love to get my hands on the HH model. Basically a Model 5 with sharkies, Schaller trem & pull-up route.
