  • Charvel Spectrums

Hi, new to the site but not to these guitars, of which I have several.

Very interested to read and learn about Charvel Model 8, the apparent predecessor to the Spectrum. Even more interested to learn more about its roots. Any other known videos apart from Jeff Beck/Ambitious?

I'd also like to hear from anyone with significant model detail and serial # info. I can post pix of my three originals and one cosmetically modified if anyone is interested, and am happy to contribute my mimited knowledge to date to the site.

      I think Spectrums are sexy!
      Please post pictures!

I was recently tempted by a magenta(?) one with a maple board. It went dirt cheap, but I just couldn't handle extra guitar expenses at the time.

I'm far from an expert, but I think the Model 8 was only made in the last year of the model series (which would have been 1988). It had the "guitar" Charvel logo, as opposed to the "toothpaste" logo that was on the Spectrum.

Apparently some Model 8s came with the JT-590 by Schaller, and some with the JT-6 trem(?). The biggest difference between the Model 8 and a Spectrum, is probably that the M8 had a non-recessed bridge with a pull-up route under it, while a Spectrum would have a fully recessed bridge.

Those pastel spectrums with maple boards are awsome looking,

The retro look combined with the Schaller and slim neck means you could play it in any kind of band from Alternative to Country but still throw in some dive bombs and sweeps when no ones looking.

I think the Spectrums are better functionally than the model 8 because of recessed trem, neck heel scallop and jt590.

If I got one I would put a full size bridge hum in, I've seen some pics of that mod

I have my Spectrum taken apart, but I recall it has a JT-6 oddly enough, and in chrome which is odd as I never knew they had any model series with chrome JT-6's.
