  • Floyd nut for a Model 5a

    Can any of you ladies and gentlemen tell me what size Floyd Rose nut a model 5a would take please?

    Alos how much of a job is it to replace the original jackson locking system and normal nut with one of the Floyd nuts. I'm a bit worried about taking wook away from the area and weakening the neck area.

    Anybody else done this without any problems?

    You can use either an R3 or R4 nut (both are 1 11/16"), depending on whether you want wide or narrow string spacing. I prefer the R3 (narrower) to keep my E strings from being too close to the edge. To install it, you need to create a shelf with a wedge of material to compensate for the tilt-back headstock. Here's a pic of my '84 Charvel neck that had a floyd nut installed:
