  • Charvel 475 wood type?

    hey guys,

first I wanna say, I looked through the catalogue scans and couldnt find what I was looking for.

the one I am looking at has a FMT, but I am wondering what the rest of the body is? Basswood? Alder?

    thanks in advance!

I think it's most likely Alder, because from my research most of the imports were alder. I could be wrong though.

I'm curious, where are you doing your research, Bizarro-Web?

Model series and Contemporary series (script logo, aka toothpaste logo) bolt-on Charvels are all basswood. Trans-colors had flamed maple top and backs. With this said, there are a couple of exceptions:
Model 7 (tobacco burst) - Ash
Model 88 - African Ribbon Mahogany

**Note, I'm speaking of bolt-on bodies only.

Isn't basswood kinda light? Why is my 275 heavier than any of my other Charvels?

It's got 4 lbs of filler on it.

From what I understand wood density/weight varies depending on where in the tree the wood is obtained from.

IE - Closer to the center, a little more dense and heavy compared to something close to the "surface".

Did you like the guitar and it's tone before you knew it was Basswood?
If so, does it really matter that it's not Alder?

Or are you a spec snob?

Listen the the sound Via gets out of his Jems... they're made of Basswood.

Basswood rocks A very under appreciated tone wood...Like stated before look at the $2K plus guitars that are made of basswood. That should tell ya something.
