  • finally got to play my 750xl's

I bought two this year and haven't really gotten to play them. one has an emg 81 in the bridge and 89 in the neck. the other has stock jackson pickups. the jack was screwed up on one and desperately in need of a set up, and the other had telephone wires for strings on it. i've been too busy to take them to the shop, finally got time, and picked them up today

i've read where ppl say these are les paul killers. mine have floyds, and while I disagree that they kill my lp, i still dig them (maybe a string-thu 750 kills an lp??).

i dig the stock jackson pickups. there is a great balance between them and i doubt i'll replace them

i can't say i love the emg 81 + 89 combo. the bridge (81) sounds ok, but i don't like the 89 in the neck. there seems to be too much of a drop in sizzle and the pickup seems muddy to me. i've never had emgs before, and with most other pickup combos, i like to switch to the neck for leads. i could prob live without switching to the neck as i surprisingly like the 81 for soloing.

are any of you using an 85 or 81 in the neck of your 750xl?

i've read some of the 750 threads, but i'll throw it out there anyway: any other pickup combos you guys like for your 750's? i'm not a death metal guy, but i like plenty of harmonics, sustain, etc

    thanks!!

Rio Grande Punchbox/Crunchbox work very well in mine.
    750xl, 88LE, AT1, Roswell Pro, SG-X, 4 others...
Stilletto Duece 1/2 Stack, MkIII Mini-Stack, J-Station, 12 spaces of misc rack stuff, Sonar 4, Event 20/20, misc outboard stuff...

Why do I still want MORE?

I have the Distortion Mayhem set, with a Super 5 way that allows Nh, Ns, NBh, Bs, and Bh. I also put in a push/pull to reverse the phase when the 5 way is in the middle position.

I have 4 Les Pauls. I wouldn't call the 750XL an LP Killer, but it easily hangs with them. The thin neck and jumbo frets are nice. But nothing would completely replace my Les Pauls. Lets say it would be a very difficult choice choosing between them if I had to sell. I'd be tempted to keep the 750XL because they a fewer and harder to find.

My 750 has the 81/85 combo. Not my first choice in pickups but that's what it came with. The more I play it the more I like the pickups but still prefer passive Duncans. The guys at the mixing board tell me the EMGs sound pretty fat through the mains so I'll hang with them for a while before I decide what to do.
