  • 475 Nut Width?

    Hello all!
I have a quick question for the import Charvel aficionados here I promise I am not kissing a$$ because I am a new member (cough). Nonetheless, the question; I am replacing the locking nut shelf on a Charvel 475, yet, I have no idea what part# to order. I suspect 1 11/16th, (part numbers r3 & r4, wide and narrow) but I am uncertain. Any input is appreciated.

R4 if the neck is not bound, R3 if it does have binding.

The bigger issue will be getting the correct nut height. Some are too tall (need to be ground down) and some are too short, needing shims. Changing nuts is a PITA, I try to avoid it if at all possible.

I have an old unfinished 1989 ESP M-1 custom which I have a Schaller R2 nut that is the perfect nut height, yet I wasted money on 2 R3 and 2 R4 nuts trying to find one with the correct width. I gave up and decided to stick with the R2 even if it's a tad narrow.

Hey thanks man. (A$$ kissing..successful.. mission accomplished). The neck is bound, so an R3 it is. I am very pleased to know I was on the right track.

The 475's use Made in Germany (REAL OFR or Schaller) nuts. Import knock off nuts wont work on them, theyre too short. R3 or R4, its your choice as theyre the same size nut, its just a slight difference in string spacing.

Thanks Rob, I intend to purchase genuine Schaller parts for this project. (Warmoth, FTW) On a related note, referring back to Dons' reply; In the event I need to shim the nut, what material do you guys typically use? Again, all advice is appreciated.

Oder a set of assorted nut shims from Warmoth.Any good guitar shop should stock them. They are metal and cut to fit thus saving you the time and trouble.
            Really? well screw Mark Twain.

If you get the Schaller nut you wont need to do any shimming. Ive got 3 of these guitars/necks... ask me how I know.

Welp... The first 475 neck I got, I assembled what is now the "Bender Rhoads" and put an import nut on not knowing. The nut was so low that the strings were bent over the first fret. Put on a real nut and its perfect!
