  • case preference

Hello all, just wondering which guitar case style do folks here prefer. Chainsaw or the "tweed" one.

From a practical standpoint, I think I prefer the chainsaw cases: Smaller footprint, lighter, and the plastic skin isn't going to get tears in it. However, they DO seem more prone to latch and feet blowout, due to impact. I just fixed two blown out latches on a chainsaw case, which wasn't hard at all, but I have yet to think of an easy way to repair blown out feet.

I happened to have a bunch of replacements, however, for them to work, I had to mod them a bit, cause the bases were slightly different.
The neck thing I did was made a backer plate out of 1/8" aluminum, with the proper matching holes. Make the plate large enough that there's not chance of it pulling through the blown-out holes, left by the previous latches, but small enough to fit inside the area, comfortably. I dropped the plate between the internal padding and outer shell, lined up the holes, and pop-riveted, using stainless rivets, not the standard aluminum ones, to ensure they don't work loose. If I have time, I'll post a pic of the end-product.

I have a hard time finding the replacement butterfly latches for the chainsaw type cases.

I think they are normally called "military quarter-turn latches", at least that's how I found them.

Here's one that calls them "wing turn latches":

Here's some more. The ones I used look like those on the top-middle, which I had to mod a bit:

Cool thanks for the link. Most of the military ones I remember were quite a bit larger.
