I've got a line on a 750

I found a 750 for sale and I'm debating on grabbing it. The seller tells me it is a cherry burst with a floyd and supposedly in great shape. I'm still waiting for some pics.

The threads and other links here about 750XLs have been a big help but I'm still on the fence about this one. Main reason is I'm expecting it to be heavier with a thicker neck than I'm used to. I have a couple model 6s and I'm wondering how it compares to them.

I'm told it does not have the trem bar or a case but the bridge pickup has been changed to a Seymour Duncan. Any help on the going rate for one of these? I'm not looking to low ball him but I want to know what's a fair price, depending upon the condition.

I doubt it will be a big adjustment going to the thicker neck. I mean it's not like going from a Jackson to Les Paul baseball bat neck.

John, the necks are great on these. Mine is just a little bit thicker than my Model 6, but I think it's just as playable & comfortable. I actually took measurements a few years ago comparing the two, & Henrik has them up on his site. As far as weight, yes it is heavier, but not super heavy, imo. I haven't been keeping up with prices too much lately, but it seems like they were going up last I checked. Three years ago you could get them for ~$500 without much trouble, but I think now they're going for more like $700 and up depending on condition, color, and how nice the top is on the trans finished ones. IMO, they are well worth it. Killer tone, great workmanship, and I don't think there is anything out there like it for the same money.

I don't have a Model 6 to compare to.

I'd say it's about the same neck shape as my fairly newish SL2H Bengal.

Both of these necks are thinner than my LP Classic or 60's necked LP Std.

Both of these necks are fatter than my 90 Fusions, which I've heard are the thinnest of all Jackson necks.

So there you go, somewhere between a thin LP neck and a Fusion.

Weight wise, my 750XL (string thru) is right there with my LP's, around 8.5 - 9lbs.

Not having a case makes me worry if you are having it shipped. No trem bar as well, unknown Duncan pickup? These guitars are hard to price. I think mine is worth a hell of a lot more than what I paid for it just because I love it so much. I really think these guitars have a lot of resale potential in the future because of the limited run of them.

Mine is wired with a Duncan Distortion Mayhem set with the Stew-Mac Super Way and a push/pull tone for phase reversal.

I have an M6 and a 750. The necks feel almost identical to me. The 750 is a little thicker higher up the neck, but the difference is minimal, IMO. The ones in transparent finishes are made from mahogany, so I'd rate those higher than the solid color ones (who seem to be made from basswood or alder).

You can easilly get a new trem bar with the corresponding socket. The JT-590 trem on the 750 is made by Schaller, and is much better regarded than the JT-6 on the M6. In my 750, I have a Duncan Distortion SH-6 in the bridge position, and a Full Shred SH-10N at the neck. The original bridge pickup (J-80C) is now in my M6.

The 750 is a really thick guitar, and it is heavy compared to modern Jacksons - but I don't think you'll have a problem with its weight if you're used to the M6es.

As DonP hinted above comparing the neck to his fusions, remember it has a shorter scale than your model six. For some (myself included) it a bit offsetting, that is the only quirk I have. As far as the price.... $700.00 seems to be "par", however, having no OHSC may be a good bargaining chip. A trem bar will set you back less than $20.00.

i own 2. i bought one online after not having played one since about 1990. at first i didn't dig the shorter scale and thought the neck was VERY thick compared to the neck on my model 4. i also had been playing an ibanez 550 a lot (hershey bar neck). the 750 neck just feels like a wide handful. however, i adjusted quickly. I absolutely love my 750's. now they feel very comfortable to me and they sound like heaven. i love them with stock pickups. I hesitated before buying a second one (silly me), but they're all i play now and will never sell them.

I have a M6 and a 750xl too. The difference in necks is as everyone says not very great.
