  • Scored a pawnshop Model 1, but have question...

I've been playing Model Series Charvels for over 20 years, but have never owned or played a Model 1. So I was kind of looking for one, especially with a maple fretboard. So on Saturday during my normal pawnshop rounds, I found a red Model 1 w/maple board in really good shape...even has the original trem bar. (sorry, I don't have a way to load pics) But I had a question for you guys who have these axes. Are the necks on these guitars normally thicker than other Model Series Charvels. Because the neck on this thing is beefy. Unlike any other bolt-on Charvel I've ever owned, and I have a load of them. Just curious. I still like it a lot, but it is definitely a different feeling neck than any of my others. Thanks for any info. Oh yeah...I paid $240 out the door, which was more than I wanted to pay, but looks like from e-bay they are bringing even more than that often times.

No they mostly are the same as other models but you got lucky. Yes you paided a bit much but with Pawn Shops using Ebay as blue book it'll only get worst. Most pawn brokers know next to nothing about guitars and can't tell when Ebay is selling a NEW guitar or used ,so the higher price is what they use. When you call them on it they say that's what they go for on Ebay.

Yeah...they were asking $299. I read the code and they only had $75 in it. I was really hoping to get it for less than $200, but with the way the prices on these things have been going up and up lately, I figured I'd better get it while I could. I used to find these things in every pawn shop just a few years ago for $80 or maybe a little more. I think those days are over, so I'm going to be snagging all the ones I find from now on unless they are just super over-priced. I don't see nearly as many as I used to. Thanks for the info.

        Hey Dana!,
I thought you fell off the face of the earth or somethin'!!
How have you been?, and the family?
Glad to hear that you're still playing and doin' the whole pawn shop hoppin' thing!
I recently got back from a vacation to see the parents down in Tulsa and had a chance to hit all the pawn shops down there and actually picked up an 80's model 3A and also found two Charvel cases for real cheap.
As you know, I been mostly playing the vintage Deans for a long time but picked up the 3A at a pawn shop and just loved the neck and the fret wire size and they do seem to be a little beefier than I remember! Now I'm hooked! I've bought two others in the last month or so!!,LOL!!
Send me an e-mail or give me a call sometime.

          Hey Mark!
I am not believing this! YOU are playing Charvels now? LOL! You always hated those thin necks, bro'! I saw a post a while back that you made and I thought you mentioned owning some Charvels, which really surprised me. I told Michelle about it just the other night, actually.

Anyway, we're fine down here, now...went through a bunch of crap, which is why I haven't been available. We also have a new phone number, but we are not able to make long distance calls. So if you wanna rap, you'll have to call me. I'll shoot you an email or vice versa...I still have the same address. Later man.

I had a 1A and it was a lot beefer then the others I have had. I sold it because of that 16-17 years ago.

$249 for a maple boarded Model 1 is a very fair price, especially considering what they pull on eBay and otherwise. Congrats on the Model 1!

That's a great price. I scored my Mod 1 for $199 on ebay. When you add in the shipping cost it's about as cheap as they get. And RED is the only color that is a Model 1. Mine is safely put away. Thank you very much. I don't know the pawnshop code at mine but they admitted to me they shoot for 3X their money. They are liars.:ROTF:
I am a true ass set to this board.

Thanks for the replies and info! I actually thought it wasn't a bad price, especially for the maple board. I've seen quite a few people on here that seem to seek those out, so I knew I wasn't going to let this one go. I might have even paid the $300 they had it marked at if I had to. But glad I didn't. Love this axe!

I bought my Model 1 (same as yours - red, maple) at a shop around 1992 for $180. It was one of three NOS Model 1's that had been sitting untouched since delivery several years earlier.

I had a Model 4 at the time and to my hands, the necks were identical. I absolutely love the necks on these guitars. Whether they deviated or changed, I don't know.

Not to hijack the thread, but let me say hello to everyone as this is my first post here. I found the forum a while ago and have enjoyed reading...just haven't posted as I don't have much to add and don't have pics to post of my beloved Model 1...but I'll work on that.

                        Cheers.

Hey man, welcome to the board. I don't post much any more myself, but have been a member for 5 years or so.

Anyway yeah...I have 15 or so Model series Charvels, and all the necks are pretty much identical, as you say. But this one Model 1 is different from all the others. Maybe they were using it during a set up of a machine or something and hadn't quite gotten everything just right. Whatever the reason, it's a cool change.

Nice score! Yeah, they were cheaper a few years ago but today, $240 out the door is great, especially in such good shape as you describe. And S-n-B, welcome to the board!

I can't really notice any difference between my Models. The necks are all pretty consistent.
