I have seen significant variations in the density of MY grain pattern of late...

Well it WAS a funny classic derail.

Spike, did you find the 88 to be a dull, lifeless tone slog?

True, it is not as bright as some of the other shredders of the same setup, but
I never would describe it as being "muddy".

Just my opinion o' course, I don't own the "Tonefinders"!

I thought mine was muddy. i even swapped pickups and still didn't bond with it.

            Well there's another one then.
I guess I got lucky-I'm certainly not tone deaf.

Guys, I wanted to thanks eveyone who helped in my quest of getting an original case for my 88, make a long story short mine was stolen. I was able to get a new case. The case is mint, she must have been sitting around for a long long time. it does have some sunlight yellowing which i have seen on these cases. I have a goo way of getting rid of that, but heck it is a 22yrs old case in mint condition all latches mint no cracks ETC. and as far as the price goes, it was extremely cheap by my standards. Here are pics of what an original Model 88 case looks like for future reference. Thanks again.

BTW Does anyone have the COA that came with these? I could use a copy or scan of all the paper work, as mine were int the case that was stolen. You can e-mail the files to me @ [email protected]. I'll creat a new post

                  CygnusX1,
Thanks. I am so happy again that I finally scored a case and to get one in this minty shape, is perfect for my model 88. She is very happy with her new home.
Now finding case candy,, ugghh. I have always thought it was good to keep that stuff in the case with the guitar. it is a good thing except when some ass hat has to steal the case.

                    Hello,
I suppose it isn't remarkable, but I'm impressed with the variation in the grain
character on different 88's. I've seen them wavey, straight, dark to light, tight and open.
And the tobacco burst has different characteristics also.

                      Yes.

I believe they have different tone characteristics as a result.
Two or three here have described them as muffled...mine isn't.

Mine is not muffled at all very open and woody sounding. The J-95 has some bite and sounds great in mahogany.
                        Really? well screw Mark Twain.

It's there to accent the bass just a little.
They didn't do it to make the "parallel line" people uncomfortable.
                            Or...
