  • Steve Lynch Charvel (Pic Heavy)

Just thought I'd summarise how my refinishing has gone (if anybody remembers! It's been a long time, the lacquer gun broke!)

So one day I decided to make a replica of steve lynch's charvel. I emailed him for specs and he said that it was an alder body from 1984, kahler pro and EMG81.

So I dropped my fishing line into the Ebay sea for a while and got my bits and pieces - I actually got a basswood model 2 body from 1987, and a 1986 maple neck so I am told. It's been my first refinishing project. Here's how I went about it:

First I stripped the body and headstock. Dunno if you guys know but THIS TAKES A LONG LONG TIME!!!! The original finish must have been a 2 part poly. I shed many frustrated tears and discarded many bald sheets of sandpaper. Electric sander.

I filled the trem route with a thick wooden block, painstakingly hand sanded to a perfect fit, araldited it in place. And then used automotive filler to make it merge perfectly with the top of the guitar. Then after the priming, I started the white spraying. I also bought a vinyl Charvel decal from best-decals.com and clear coated over the top.

I then masked off the body and shot a few coats of red.

I then Bought a router and did two practice kahler routes on some scrap wood. I'd never routed before in my life! My third route it was for real, my hands were shaking so badly and I felt positively sick with fear of screwing it up!

But it came out alright. I was suprised at how soft basswood was, it was like routing through butter. Anyway..
The actual body needs a few more coats of lacquer, some 2000grade sanding and a polish, but here it is as it is now:

So that's that! Thanks for checking it out!
Needless to say, refinishing is harder than it looks, and I was just a 17 year old boy who pretty much didn't have a damn clue! I actually restarted the finishing process from scratch a Whopping total of 3 times ... but let's just forget that shall we... Yes I think I better had.

Hey now, that came out great!! I love seeing all the projects that have been showing up lately, great job!

I do have a question if you don't mind? Why did you wait until it was painted to route for the trem?

              In any case,

Not that it matters, because you did a killer job, but ya coulda sanded that poly to roughen it up a little then shot your primer over that...? Like I say, doesn't matter now, but maybe for another proejct? You sure did good shooting the spray. First time painting too?

                  Looks great!
How did you go about placing the Kahler in the proper place to insure correct intonation? The reason I ask is the Kahler looks about 1/4" farther back/away from the pickup than my Kahler'd Jacksons/Charvels. Have you put strings on it and checked intonation? Since it's a 25-1/2" scale guitar, the distance from the top of the 12th fret to the brass string rollers on the Kahler should be in the neighborhood of 12-3/4", so you could do a quick check.

                    Thanks for the replies!

Thanks for all the replies guys! I don't actually know why I did things in an odd order, lol, being my first project I didn't really know there was an order.

Oh the hardware isn't screwed down at the moment because it needs a bit more lacquer on the body. In this picture the kahler has slipped backward in its route a little bit. The Kahler installation instructions at wammiworld.com was a real life saver!

Im actually 18 now, it took so long because I had to repeatedly start the painting over and over again (I had no idea how tricky refinishing was!!) Hmm that trick you said would have saved me a lot of time, wanthairspray. I used a cellulose based high gloss piano lacquer which gave me the nice hard plastic finish I was after - can anybody comment on this? Is it likely to get bucklerash faster?

I might spit out another in the near future, the yellow on black design one, and then sell it off but I'm not sure at the moment.

                    Thanks!

                    What's your project Franx?

Looks very cool. I was just wondering why you didn't use the Jackson logo to match Steve's original?

hey man, good point there actually! I wondered which logo I should use..
He had 2 necks for it I think. A black charvel logo one and a red jackson logo one.

Just noticed that best-decals.com doesn't sell headstock logos anymore - that's a bit of a bummer.

Awesome job dude! Very cool. I like when people choose maybe not the most popular signature and go for it! This kinda thing sparks some memories!
