  • Difference Between Models 5 and 6?

Well, what's the difference between these two models? All I can think of is the pickup configuration.
Also how would these guitars stand up against let's say a newer SL3?

I'm planning on getting another guitar. I have 3 now and I'm pretty much just an intermediate player who jams at the house. I want something that's going to offer me someting different than I have now and that I'll keep for a long time. If I'm better off saving until I have $2,000 plus than so be it, but between the MIJ neck thru Charvels and Jacksons that I can score in the $500 - $700 range if these are that good than of course that's my preffered option.
13' Gibson Les Paul Trad Pro ii - Alpine White
05' Gibson Les Paul Classic - Ebony
    USA Jackson SL-2
    USA Jackson SL-1
    Peavey Valveking ii 20MH
    Marshall 1965A 4x10
    Marshall 1960AV 4x12

Model 6 has neck & headstock binding, sharkfin inlays, 3 mini-toggles for pickup selection

Model 5 has no binding, dot inlays, blade switch.

You might also consider the Contemporary series neckthru Charvels, the 550XL or 650XL. They have the toothpaste logo (which some don't like) but also come with Schaller trems.

Also, look out for the old Professional series Jackson Soloists, particularly the Soloist PRO.

Hey guys, another option for me is that I have a line on a Hamer Chapparel. It's a USA made neck-thru. Anyone familiar with these?

those Hamer Chaps are nice guitars, but you might be better served posting that Q over the Guitars by Other Manufacturers section. There are guys over there who don't necessarily check in on the Import Charvel section. But I know some of them have some seriously nice Hamers

That's not true at all. SL3's are top notch guitars, especially the ones with OFR's. Especially if you're like me and prefer a recessed trem...

I prefer non-recessed trems! In fact, I'm getting rid of my guitars with recessed trems so I can buy more guitars with non-recessed trems.

Charvels also had MOP inlays and bound headstock and fretboard. OK, it doesn't add anything to the sound/playability but it sure is a nice feature.

OFR is of questionable quality on those SL3s....there is a thread from few days ago on those foyds...

                  Hey!!
I'm new in this forum...but love my Charvels
                  Here's what I have so far..originals...
-89 750XL String thru body (bought it new!! in 90)
                  -90 650XL Desert Crackle
-87? 550XL (just bought on the BAY, WAITING PATIENTLY!!!
                  -90 Fusion Deluxe
-91? 475 Special black and gold crackle
                  -95 LS-1

axetogrind was asking about the soloists..Charvel dropped the archtop 750's after 1990, which basically became the Jackson soloists (although there are cheaper versions of jacksons)..650's are great...but the 750 is honestly the nicest guitar I have ever played...no exceptions.
I also have 6 various DK's and older Dinkys and pros
13 fender strats...mostly 80' jap squier and 90's mex standards
and a couple of Players Deluxe w' Lace Hot Golds

Anyway...Ya know a bit about me...see you around..

                            Yea...Hoping it's in fine shape!!
ALmost bought a model 5a ..looks like a 5fx, but the seller was honest, the single route was home made....just a 5A with a big hole in it...still a great axe.

By the way, I'm still figuring out this conference, I started a thread in the import forum, I have some pics now...cheers.

Not really. A Soloist is neck-thru construction. The 750XL was set neck.
