          Differences:

M6 has MOP inlays, SL3 plastic.
M6 has neck and headstock binding, SL3 does not.
M6 has poplar body wings, SL3 alder (minimal difference really).
M6 has a (fully floating) non-recessed Floyd (meaning a Les Paul-like neck angle).
SL3 has a recessed Floyd (no neck angle, like a Strat).
SL3 has an OFR, while the M6 has a rather poor licensed Floyd (or a Kahler).
SL3 has a proper locking nut, M6 a string lock behind the nut.
SL3 has Duncans, M6 Jackson pups with an active mid-boost.

On top of that, they differ a little in neck profile. Going up the neck, the M6 is generally a little beefier, but I'm being told the '86es (with Kahlers) had slimmer necks.

Your talking your guitar right .The only thing is the JT-6 sucks but other than that M6 is the one I'ld chose.

I'd second that opinion. For me, the non-recessed Floyd is primarily what makes the M6 the winner. Binding and MOP is nice as well.

The best summary/answer to that question I've ever seen.

Model 6 has a top mount trem which means no body route for the trem Sl3 has a recessed trem therefore a route for the trem. The top mount trem model 6 has the neck set at an angle like a L.P. The SL3 is flat like a strat.
The JT-6 trem is not crap at all I have had plenty and have never had a bad one.In fact I like the position of the fine tuners.Rock solid trem IMO.
If you find an 86 model 6 with the Kahler buy it you won't be sorry.Kahlers are wonderful trems.

Does a non recessed floyd feel like a TOM? I never really liked the feel of recessed floyds, but I really like the feel of the new Charvels, which are obviously non-recessed.

Not trying to go off topic, but I've just seen a natural SL3. I didn't have time to try it out, but it looks yum.

Since it is about the same height as a TOM, the non-recessed Floyd makes for a similar playing posture for your hands. But a Floyd will never feel quite the same as a TOM, regardless of how it's mounted.
