  • Red Model 2

Hey guys. I picked this guitar up on eBay. I love it but I can't keep it in tune. I'm thinking about taking the Kahler tremolo and locking nut off. The damn B string running right through the locking screw/nut. I'm not how to correct this. I'm not much of a whammy bar guy anyway. The pickup sounds like crap too...so I figured I'd change it out also.

I'd love to hear any tricks or tips.

Try running the strings from underneath the trem. Stringing it like a strat. But making sure you thread it right and ots over the wheel. Also try oiling the wheels a bit. They could be hangin up.

Check the condition of the lock nut. These can get grooved by the strings and then they don't lock the string. I had this problem when I got my model 4. The only fix was to replace the lock body.

Mine works good now, I oiled the wheels, did a few dives before hand to stabilise, and then retuned after each...mine had crapped out tuning too, and those simple steps really helped! As Grandturk says, checking the behind nut-lock might help too.

I dont know what pickup that is. If its a stock one its missing the cover, unless 86 had no covers. Not with a pickguard anyway, but I thought with a ring it would have a cover. People are usually happy with the j90c that comes in there. If it needed to be replaced Id look for a used j90c or a tonezone or a duncan custom series. People generally like them in basswood guitars. I see the lock screws are missing in the locknut. Did you do that or did it come that way? I see the string through the hole. Just loosen it up before putting the lock screw in there. The string will then sort of wrap around it a bit. Ive got a red one just like that except for the kahler, mine has a jt-6.

Try stringing your B string by winding the tuner in the oppposite direction. It will guide the string in more of a straight angle, which might help.
Also before you string it, put your locking nut screw on first, that might help the string get past the screw better.

I'll try those techniques. I appreciate the pickup recommendation. I didn't even consider what would sound good in basswood. I'm pumped to fix this baby!
