  • Modding a model 1A??

Alright guys, I can get a Model 1A for 275$ can. Before I buy it, and I know it seems pretty rare, I want to change the pups for a HSS configuration. Will it need routing underneath that pickguard?

Is it a standard strat pickguard?

    Thx

No routing required. It has a swimming pool route under the pickguard. Not sure if a standard Fender Strat pickguard holes will line up.

FYI - the route on my Model 1A was shallow - meaning it didn't have room for the "legs" of humbucker pickups. I have seen them with deeper routing, however - not sure what the years are for which. Actually, there's room for short legs, but the screws will not fit.

First, I cut the screws after installing the hums in the pickguard - that works.

After doing that for a while, I got the dremel out and routed the sides of the pool out so I didn't have to cut the screws anymore... I am not a professional - witness:

Yes, I found this to be the same thing on a 1a body that I had. Since I was only interested in a humbucker in the bridge position, I just drilled a shallow hole on each side where the long screw would hit using a 1/4" bit. But note that pickups with "long" or "deep" ears will require the routing because you wont be able to lower them enough that they dont hit the strings. The 3a bodies have the deeper rout from the factory. Most replacement pickguards will work but you might have to drill a few new screw holes.
