No, Vera's not been using an air fed mask...she uses a balaclava and an old scarf... Here's a pic with some lacquer applied today. A long way to go with more coats and then Finesse and polishing...
hi everyone! haven't been on here for a while and then remembered Sean will put my work on here...!
I am using 2k industrial laquer, clearcoat....with the whole kit gravity fed gun and compressor, Sean is the one that spends the time buffing the finish up!!!
I have never used spray cans on the guitars i have done, suppose cause it comes out uneven...but having said that it is possible to use cans but the process would take longer as you will have to spend the time flatting back etc...
Those look 100% better than the EDS on my DK2M. I would love to have one done like that, but with tye-dye candy colors (red, blue, yellow/light green).
I have a DKMGT body that I have wanted to have painted for over a year now so I would be motivated to finish the project. Send me a pm if you are interested in taking on some more work, and how much you would charge for something like that. Also, I have no knowledge at all about putting a clear coat on, is that something you do?
I love the skull detail on that one EDS. It looks badass!

what's sad today is that they are putting printed graphics on the guitars now, how crap is that!? and they aren't even good....
i went on a car body work course to learn about applying paint and the finishing process, to get the shine you use fine grade paper to flat back and also compound to polish the surface....and you get the finish you see, exact same process as on a vehicle.....
I thought it was 2pak, cause it gives such a beautiful gloss...you must be using an air-fed mask or something? Don't you have to be really careful and be using it in a really well ventilated area?
Yes i do use a mask for all spraying jobs no matter what i use, 2k is harmful!
i have a shed and am using a hvlp gravity gun which causes less spray waste and the cup is only 100ml , it appears to be doing the job, the other gun is larger and causes too much spray....am happier with this one....
it is possible to get a decent finish with cans but you would need some layers and know the finishing process to get there, which is why i dont use cans as it would cost more in the long run and create more work flatting back....
any questions ask away...i will try post some pics of other stuff.
Beautiful work. I'm sorta utilitarian w/guitars and hard on them as well. I'd be afraid to own something so nice cuz I'd scratch it up, but those are just absolutely stunning.
Just wondering how many coats of clear you spray, 24seven.
I am put off by the fact that it is so toxic, but really want the shiney-ness.
I guess I could ask a car repair place, perhaps.
Out of interest, what type or model of mask are you using?
i can't remember but it was quite a few, they say 4 coats usual but i will apply couple more as i will flat it by hand with grade 1200/2000 paper, this gives the flat surface and knocks the shine off it, last stage would be buffing with compound to bring back the shine, and lastly a good car wax.
There are different grades of compound, it is an abrasive so will take some laquer off, which is why i will ensure i get enough on.
the mask is a Gerson 8203e, i just found one on ebay uk, number 250378494954, recommened for 2k, we used these at college too, i still wrap some cloth round my face on top of it mainly cos the thinners makes me high.
I smoked for over 30 years and i gave up almost coming to 4 years now, nothing is more destroying than cigarettes.
Car place may charge around £50 to laquer, i already asked a while back.

Wilks, look forward to painting your guitar at some point...anymore offers keep 'em coming, glad to help. ))
wanthairspray - I couldn't find my car damage pics but found this one i sprayed up and polished up by flatting and compounding all by hand...didn't put any laquer on this one and i sold it as it was, so the person could relic it...it was a starburst finish underneath.
