  • 5A make over time!

    You've all seen it.
It was one of those bodies that was on eBay that were never assembled.

Looked like this when I got it.
No logo and the paint had a nice run on the face and a few scratches on the back.

Buffed it out and made a shopping trip to www.fretsonthenet.com
And Dave set me up with new bushings and studs, cover plates and a pup ring.
Then I added an OFR and other hardware to complete the guitar.

But I still thought it was too boring.

So I began stripping it to see what I had to work with.
The wood is ugly as I suspected, so I gave Mike Learn a shout and went over some options.
I also added a Floyd nut shelf while I had the paint off.

So here is what it looked like just before I shipped it off last week.

Mike has it now and is working his mojo.
I'm not going to give away anything just yet.

This WAS an option, but it was a bit cost prohibitive. Shitload of masking.

It will still be a multi color finish, just not as intricate.

Check back later to see the finished project.

        Update time....

Mike and I had a nice chat today and this is going to be the color of the front of the body and headstock.

It's going to be black on the back of the body and headstock with a mini stinger going into an unfinished neck.
The transition from the sparkle red to the gloss black will be like a mini sunburst, if that makes sense.

        It's gonna look absolutely awesome!

If you saw the price difference between the two paint jobs, you would be happy with the red/black combo.

The Union Jack idea I had would have required a lot more work and time.
There was a more to it than the mock up.
Mike is a great painter and his skill commands top dollar.

In the end, it wasn't so much the cost of the paint job as I could have easily afforded it. It was more how much I was willing to invest in a paint job on THIS particular guitar.

Trust me, I'm more than happy with the paint job Mike is going to be doing on this guitar.

I like the red better anyway, I'd grow tired of the Union Jack after a while...but that red sparkle I'd never tire of, that's smokin'!

                  Nice make-over.

I'd bet the Union Jack was around $1100, give or take $100. The black/red sparkle burst is probably around $400 but I'm guessing on that one.

A little more than four bills for the red/black, but you can ask Mike for a direct quote.
Stripping it before sending it off does save you some $$$

Cool project! Good call on the unfinished (oiled?) neck.

It was designed to use a Kahler style string lock.
I prefer a Floyd style lock nut, so I converted it.
