That is sweet. Have painted numerous axes myself. Do you use a spray gun or rattle cans? I def. like the rising sun graphic.

          There's a reason I haven't updated this thread in a while....
Unfortunately, I fubar'd the clear, and while trying to fix it, made things worse and jacked the paint below. Tried fixing that and it just went straight to hell. Had to sand it all back to square one. She's sitting there in just primer at the moment.

I'm just rattle canning it, but I'm looking into better equipment.

That Charvel Star is badass! I will own one of those eventually.

Looking back through this thread, this shit has gone on too long!!! This project will be finished dammit!!!

That's turning out killer. I have been lusting for a Kelly too, always have really. I've owned 3 of them, but the necks are all too thin. I have thought time and time again to swap out the neck with a dk model, but they are too thin in reality as well. I tell myself i could probably live with it, but i probably wouldn't play it much so it's not a priority.
Seems you got lucky on that body with the floyd route too, that was another thing, filling the route rerouting for a true floyd, repaint ect.. then i would just be rebuilding it entirely practically, so i figure if i was to do that i'd probably be better off just building one. Maybe i will, but i have 2 other guitars i have planned to build first.

            [Edit]
Ah your post came in before mine, well that sucks about the paint. What are you using? Did you try the reranch stuff?
I been studying paint a lot recently. When i build i will probably be going with auto polyuerethane, and the 2k clears. I'm pretty set on the spraymax 2k clear that comes in the rattle cans for starters, maybe later getting a gun and stuff. Lacquer i'm not to excited about, but won't rule it out.

I feel your pain. nothing like being on the last lap of a project and have things fall apart. The rising sun graphic is cool and all but what bout something even more personal.

Yeah, it really was the last lap as I had it just about perfect and got a run in what was to be the last coat of clear on the lower horn....I tried to sand it out, but for some reason the run turned into a hole when I sanded it out. Then I tried to sand down just that area, but the hole went down to the paint and after re-clearing it, it was still visible. I made a few attempts at repairing it, and ended up jacking up the red coat under the clear. Then when trying to fix the paint by just taking the clear off the horn, I got impatient and I suppose I didn't let the paint cure long enough, and every time I tried to clear over it, got crackle....finally said "fugg it" and sanded the whole thing back down and re-primed it. Knowing how much time I'd already invested, and how much more time it was going to take to get back to where it was, I just kinda pushed it to the side. I've got to get back to it soon.

It will be a rising sun graphic! I've always wanted one of those, so it shall be. That's personal enough for me.

Likewise, I have a 7 string BCR Warlock that I've tried something complex & different with the rattle cans & frisket film. Then I fucking dropped the ax and knocked a sizable chunk of the paint off. Right down to the wood. Needless to say, I was pissed. I tried patching it w/ black but it didn't look quite right. So, she sits in the basement, waiting. Waiting for me to finally shit or get off the pot. Glad to hear you're still committed to getting that Kelly done. That's gonna look badass when it's finished.

I have a Charvel Star project I had to restart twice cause of ,Paint mistakes. Stick with it, it was coming out great! As for the Trem you have . It's a 580 LP it's made by Tekkuchi.

That trem is exactly like one I got off ebay. Its simply an unbranded JT580, if you search ebay you can find them, there's a guy sells them and other parts like the locking nuts and stuff. From what I could see, they are exactly the same as the Jackson parts but without the branding.
I put one on my own KE3 because I wanted black hardware instead of the chrome, but at the time I had JT580s on my SL3 and DK2M. They all looked the same and the bars were interchangeable on the lot of them including the unbranded one.

I will agree the rising sun graphic is awesome. I was looking at a thread on another site where the guy was doing a OD Green paint job because he had been in the military. as the thread progressed there was talk of a white star, maybe lettering. He came up with the patch from the unit he was in. Well, I go to looking at the big butt my Kelly has and could see doing some OD Green, with the big shark mouth and eye from the P-40s the flying tigers had. Maybe one day I'll luck up on a project body. I have the Trans. Black on my KE-3 and can't imagine taking sand paper to it.
