Amen to taking your time! The yellow jackson knock off some of you have seen was my 3rd official refinish. I don't count the spray paint jobs i did on my guitars in high school. they were more like graffiti. My favorite guitar already sold. I painted it with the "hammered finish" paint they sell to paint tool boxes. It was really cool and best of all you didn't notice finger prints. I love the process.
I was gonna ask if the putty job shrank any. I try to over stuff things like that and then let them cure a few days, sand and putty the little cracks.
So since we have inspired and encouraged you to pick the project back up, we all get joint custody right?
Turn the volume to 10 and rip off the knob!

The rising sun looks bad ass! I might try to find a cheap kelly to try that with... but last time I tried to paint a guitar I completely f***ed it up. Maybe I'll find a cheap body somewhere...

Keep the updates coming, this is exciting. And you're giving me that itch again, thinking of which guitar needs a refinishin'...

          Ok, quick update....

Wet sanded the paint to get it silky smooth yesterday...
First dusting of clear went on an hour ago.

Glad I had to re-do this project. All the things that went wrong the first go round I know how to avoid. Funny, I did a ton of reading prior to starting this project and everyone says take your time. Many light coats, not a few heavy ones. Let paint cure long enough to dry properly before moving to the next step. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Well, I read it all, and until I futzed it up myself, I obviously paid no attention. Anyway, it's turning out a lot better this time than the first time, so I'm happier in the end.

No pics since it doesn't look much different than the last pics I posted.

                  Beautiful! It screams '80s.

It wasn't originally a DKMG neck either...I'm not sure what it was from, but it was 24 frets, no binding, standard headstock. I wanted binding, and to make it really obnoxiously pointy, a reversed headstock

That's right. And selling stolen goods is a crime, so just send that Warrior Pro to me for free and we'll forget

Great job on the Kelly. As for the neck, its off a D-X-MG. The D-K-MG neck had piranha inlays, not sharkfins.
