No it's a piece of piss. Just buy yourself a push/pull pot and follow the wiring diagrams you can find on Seymour Duncan's site.

I always put/keep middle single coils as vintage type single coils to work in conjuction with higher output humbuckers or stacked humbuckers. It's a lot more versatile than the HHH setup which seems a waste of time to me. Replacing the middle Hot Rails in my SL3 for an SSL-1 really opened that guitar up for me.
Sure there's a bit of a volume drop but adjusting the pickup heights can help that, and for playing metal the middle single coil will likely only be used for clean parts anyway so you can boost the volume with a pedal when switching for those parts if you need to.
its not a myth in my KV2 where I have a dimebucker (less output then an x2n i think) and a jazz (more output then a vintage single coil i think) and if you switch between them there's a massive volume difference

Lower the Dime, raise the Jazz.

My guitar has a Hotrail-bridge in the Neck position and it was even Louder than my JB-bridge so I lowered the Hotrail, Is a very Nice pickup, lots of Bottom-End but still crisp and defined
but now I going to replace for some Samarium Cobalt Noiseless like the Adrian Smith Signature for a more classic tone, I don´t need anymore the High-Gain of the hotrail because I´m doing a Luthier Guitar with ABH-1 Blackouts
also the original "Hot Stack Plus STK-1" pickup was good, It really kicked when you played it strong, but I haven´t had good sound for classic rock and funk when it is preferable to a more bells-like or twang sound
