  • JS30DK opinions...

I'm looking for a decent lower priced guitar with a floyd. How are the new JS30 Dinky's? Not for gigging or anything, just for playing around home, jamming, etc...

I have a 2005 JS30DKT that I purchased used in a multiple guitar deal. The JS30DKT is the fixed bridge (JT390) version of the JS30DK. I really couldn't complain about the JS30DKT, it stays in tune, it doesn't have a bad tone (stock pickups), maybe a little muddy [by that I mean boomy bass with blurring of bass notes], but not that bad. Treble and mids have good note definition and tone. It seems relatively well built, since it's cheap I have let several youth play it for various events (and they never take care of their own stuff....let alone someone else's...) and my 2 year old loves to play 'tar with daddy and she jams out on it every several days (she actually can fret Em and that's about all she plays.....just like many of the youth ).

All that being said it doesn't compare with the MIJ X series or the MIK / MIJ Performer series Jacksons. The tone and build quality of either "lower end" Jackson series surpasses the JS line by a good margin. If you keep and eye on craigslist or eBay you should be able to get an MIJ X or MIJ Performer with a licensed flyod rose for well under the price of a JS30DK.

Here is a good example of a MIJ (a Professional series) with a licensed floyd rose that might serve you better:

I wouldn't shy away from a JS series if you found one for a great price, but you probably can get more guitar for the same amount of money.

      Thanks for the great response!

I'm also looking at a MIJ RG470, so that may be the way to go, provided it's in nice shape...

You know, I have always hated how Tobacco Sunburst looks in photographs (especially online)...but I finally purchased a DXMGT in Tobacco Sunburst and it looks great in person (but it photographs horrible...lol). I only comment to say take a look at the Jackson Tobacco Sunburst in person and don't judge it based on how it looks online, I love mine but hate how it looks in the above photo.

You can't go wrong with an all white guitar either though...

If you have $300-$400 USD ($320-$425 CAD) to put into a MIJ RG470 take a look at the DXMG, I can't find one on ebay.ca right now (for a good price that is), but here's one on eBay.com for $291 CAD with buy it now:

and another for $370 CAD with buy it now:
